New Skies for Namibia: Edelweiss Unveils Direct Flights to Zurich

Travellers now have an expanded direct route between Namibia and Europe following the official launch of Edelweiss' nonstop flight service connecting Windhoek and Zurich. The Swiss leisure airline commenced its inaugural flight from Hosea Kutako International Airport on a Monday evening, successfully transporting 253 passengers. This new service is poised to significantly enhance air connectivity between the two continents, offering a convenient and efficient travel option.

Initially, the flight service will operate twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays. However, in response to anticipated demand, Edelweiss plans to increase the frequency to three weekly flights, adding a Wednesday service, from mid-July until the end of October 2026. A special ceremony was held prior to the inaugural departure to commemorate this significant occasion. Dignitaries present included Renette Scholtz, Lufthansa Group Account Manager for Namibia, Bernd Bauer, Chief Executive Officer of Edelweiss, and Mirko Manzoni, the Swiss Ambassador to Namibia, who together participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of the aircraft.

Speaking at the launch event, Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer highlighted the strategic advantages of Zurich as a travel hub. He emphasized Zurich's central location within Europe and its advanced airport infrastructure, making it an appealing gateway for international travellers. Bauer stated that Zurich provides excellent connections to all major cities across the continent. Furthermore, he noted that passengers flying through Zurich benefit from its integration into the SWISS hub system, which offers seamless connections throughout the broader Lufthansa Group network, thus broadening travel possibilities for passengers.

The Windhoek-Zurich route will be serviced by the Airbus A350, which represents the newest long-haul aircraft in the Edelweiss fleet. The airline has underscored that the A350 delivers a notably quieter and more comfortable travel experience, alongside improved fuel efficiency compared to older aircraft models. Passengers on these long-haul flights can also look forward to enhanced amenities such as larger windows, more advanced cabin lighting systems, and a generally more spacious cabin environment, contributing to a superior journey.

Looking ahead, Edelweiss has outlined plans for further improvements to its onboard experience starting from 2027. At this time, its entire Airbus A350 fleet is scheduled to receive a comprehensive new cabin design. These upgrades are slated to include the introduction of new seats across all travel classes, significant enhancements to privacy features within business class, an expanded premium economy section, and the implementation of onboard internet access. These future developments are intended to solidify Edelweiss' commitment to providing a premium and connected travel experience for its passengers.
