Netflix Unleashes Global Sci-Fi Phenomenon, Hailed as Next 'Stranger Things'

Netflix has recently celebrated the successful debut of its new sci-fi series, "The Boroughs," which immediately ascended to the top of the streamer's viewership charts. Premiering on May 21 with eight episodes, the show has garnered significant critical acclaim, earning a "Certified Fresh" score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its popularity is expected to endure, driven by positive word-of-mouth.

Created by Jeffrey Adiss and Will Matthews, "The Boroughs" benefits from the executive production of the renowned Duffer Brothers, known for their platform-defining series "Stranger Things." The show adopts a Spielbergian sci-fi tone, akin to "Stranger Things," but distinctly focuses on an older demographic, featuring retirees whose peaceful community is abruptly disrupted by a mysterious otherworldly threat. The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Alfred Molina, Bill Pullman, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, and Jena Malone, with episodes expertly directed by Augustine Frizzell and Kyle Patrick Alvarez.

Following its midweek debut, "The Boroughs" quickly became one of the most-watched titles on Netflix, both domestically and worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. Domestically, it secured the number two spot, closely trailing the crime drama "Nemesis." Collider's Greer Riddell praised the series for continuing the "Stranger Things" tradition of honoring classic sci-fi elements while asserting that it "deserves more than to be discussed as a copy" of the Duffer Brothers' original hit.

The Duffer Brothers' involvement highlights their continued prolific activity, particularly as their flagship series "Stranger Things" is set to conclude in 2025. Through their Upside Down Pictures banner, they have actively supported new creators, executive-producing a trio of shows in three consecutive months. This year began in March with the release of the sensational horror series "Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen," created by Haley Z. Boston and starring Camila Morrone, which received positive reviews and consistently appeared on Netflix's viewership charts. In April, they backed the animated spin-off series "Stranger Things: Tales from '85," created by Eric Robles and Jennifer Muro, signaling Netflix's interest in expanding the "Stranger Things" franchise. "The Boroughs" completed this impressive three-month streak in May.

Looking ahead, the Duffer Brothers are embarking on a new creative partnership with Paramount. This strategic move will enable them to produce theatrical feature films alongside their ongoing television and streaming endeavors. Their timely arrival at Paramount is particularly advantageous for the studio, especially with the impending departure of Taylor Sheridan to NBCUniversal, positioning the Duffer Brothers to become one of Paramount's most valuable creative assets. Meanwhile, Netflix continues to reap the benefits of its longstanding collaboration with the creative duo.
