Netflix Expands Beyond On-Demand Streaming as It Explores Live Channels and Bundled Services
Netflix is reshaping its streaming strategy with live channels, broader content formats and subscription bundles as it seeks to boost viewer engagement amid growing competition.Netflix is reportedly considering one of the biggest strategic changes in its history as it looks to keep viewers engaged in an increasingly competitive streaming market.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, the company is exploring live television channels, streaming bundles and new content formats to encourage subscribers to spend more time on the platform.
The discussions reflect a changing landscape where competition extends beyond Disney+ and HBO Max to free, ad-supported services such as YouTube and Tubi. Netflix's share of US television viewing reportedly fell to 7.8% in April 2026, its lowest level since May 2025, according to Nielsen's monthly Gauge report.
One proposal under consideration is the introduction of genre-based live channels that continuously stream content instead of requiring viewers to choose every programme. The move is intended to reduce "decision fatigue" and create a more passive viewing experience similar to traditional television.
The idea would represent a significant departure from the model that helped Netflix revolutionise home entertainment. Since launching its streaming service, the company has championed on-demand viewing, allowing subscribers to watch what they want whenever they choose.
Netflix is also exploring ways to become a broader entertainment hub by allowing customers to purchase or manage subscriptions to other streaming platforms through its app. Similar models are already offered by services including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
Beyond platform changes, Netflix continues to diversify its content strategy with live events, sports programming and video podcasts. The company recently expanded its video podcast partnership with iHeartMedia and has increased investment in live programming to broaden its appeal beyond premium scripted series.
The reported changes highlight how the streaming industry is evolving as platforms compete not only for subscribers but also for attention.
Rather than relying solely on blockbuster original productions, Netflix appears increasingly focused on keeping viewers engaged throughout the day with a wider mix of content and viewing experiences.
