Netflix Renews 'Splinter Cell: Deathwatch' for Season 2 After Uncertain Start

Netflix has officially announced the renewal of “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” for a second season, a mere day after its highly anticipated premiere on October 14. This news, while exciting for fans, confirms a report from Variety in 2020 that indicated Netflix had initially ordered the animated series for two seasons. The show, which is an adaptation of the beloved “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell” video game franchise, has quickly garnered attention, debuting with a strong 88% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and entering the Netflix Top 10.
The animated series features a stellar voice cast, with nine-time Emmy nominee Liev Schreiber leading as the iconic protagonist, Sam Fisher. Joining him are Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Zinnia Mckenna, Janet Varney as Anna Grimsdottir, Helen Hong as Jo Ahn, Kari Wahlgren as Diana Shetland, Walles Hamonde as Bertrand, and other talented individuals including Joel Oulette, Aleks Le, Kiff VandenHeuvel, Bella Dayne, and Navid Negahban. The official logline for the series states, “Legendary agent Sam Fisher is drawn back into the field when a wounded young operative seeks out his help.”
“Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” was developed for television by Derek Kolstad, widely recognized for his work on the critically acclaimed “John Wick” franchise. Kolstad also serves as an executive producer for the series. Guillaume Dousse directs the show, with Félicien Colmet-Daage as co-director. Additional executive producers from Ubisoft Film & Television include Helene Juguet, Hugo Revon, and Gerard Guillemot. The animation for the series is provided by Sun Creature and Fost.
The source material for the series, the “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell” video game, first launched in 2002 to significant critical acclaim and impressive sales. The game immerses players in the covert world of former U.S. Navy SEAL Sam Fisher, who is recruited by the NSA to join the enigmatic Third Echelon division. Fisher’s missions involve black ops, emphasizing stealth and military tactics. The success of the initial game led to six sequels and a series of novels, firmly establishing the franchise’s legacy in popular culture.
While the renewal for a second season has been confirmed, plot details for Season 2 are still under wraps and are likely being finalized by creator Derek Kolstad, who is expected to return. Netflix has not yet provided information regarding the production start or release date for Season 2, though a new poster for the series teases its arrival as “coming soon.” Kolstad’s prolific career also includes writing both of Bob Odenkirk’s “Nobody” movies, and he is slated to re-team with Odenkirk for a new action movie titled “Normal.”
