Netflix in Legal Showdown: $351M Blockbuster Blocked!

The highly anticipated movie, "It Ends with Us," is currently unavailable to subscribers on Netflix's ad-supported tier, marking it as one of 59 titles blocked this month. This restriction is primarily due to the streamer's inability to monetize certain content through advertisements.
Upon its release a couple of years ago, "It Ends with Us" garnered significant controversy, not solely because of its dark subject matter. The film became the focal point of a widely publicized fallout between its star-producer, Blake Lively, and star-director, Justin Baldoni, who have since been entangled in a legal battle for over a year and are now headed for trial.
Despite receiving mixed reviews and initial rumors of an on-set rift during its theatrical run, the movie emerged as a massive box-office hit, grossing approximately $350 million worldwide against a reported budget of $35 million. It holds a 55% critics' score and a "Verified Hot" 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website's consensus notes, "Earnestly performed if marred by clunky dialogue, It Ends With Us is surprisingly at its most graceful when handling the more provocative elements of its melodramatic source material."
The controversy escalated after the movie completed its theatrical run when its star accused the director of sexual harassment, intimidation, and orchestrating a smear campaign. The matter remains unresolved, with a trial scheduled to commence in the coming weeks.
"It Ends with Us" is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover, whose other works have also inspired two commercially successful movies. The ongoing controversy, however, has cast a shadow over potential sequels, particularly since Baldoni's production company holds the rights to Hoover's follow-up novels.
The film, featuring Brandon Sklenar, Hasan Minhaj, and Jenny Slate alongside Lively and Baldoni, is rated PG-13, falls under the Drama/Romance genres, has a runtime of 130 minutes, and was written by Christy Hall and Colleen Hoover. It tells the story of a woman whose life takes a challenging turn when her first love reappears, complicating her relationship with a charismatic but abusive neurosurgeon. Confronted with difficult decisions, she must summon her inner strength to navigate the complexities of love and self-empowerment, ultimately shaping her path forward.
Notably, another book adaptation starring Brandon Sklenar, "The Housemaid," also saw significant commercial success, grossing $399 million at the worldwide box office in 2025, targeting a similar audience. Viewers can stay tuned to Collider for more updates regarding these developments.
