Nairobi Devastation: Floods Claim 62 Lives, City Reels from Highest Fatalities

Kenya is grappling with the severe consequences of ongoing floods, as the death toll has tragically risen to 62 following extensive heavy rains that swept across various parts of the country last week. The devastating downpours triggered flash floods, leading to widespread destruction and significant loss of life, prompting continuous search and rescue operations in the most affected regions.
Nairobi, the capital city, has recorded the highest number of fatalities, accounting for 33 deaths. Other regions have also suffered considerably, with the Eastern region reporting 17 deaths, the Rift Valley seven, and Nyanza and the Coast regions each recording two fatalities. The Central region has reported one death. The Ministry of Interior confirmed that among the 62 recorded victims, there are 46 men, eight women, and eight children, underscoring the broad impact across all demographics.
Beyond the tragic loss of life, the floods have wreaked havoc on infrastructure and communities. Earlier reports detailed how flash floods destroyed numerous homes, damaged crucial infrastructure, and displaced thousands of families. Specifically, over 2,600 households have been forced to abandon their residences as floodwaters inundated residential areas. Furthermore, several public facilities, including vital police stations, have also been affected by the rising waters, which has further complicated ongoing response and relief efforts by authorities.
In light of the continuing heavy rainfall, the government has issued an urgent public advisory, urging citizens to exercise extreme caution. Authorities have warned that the risk of further flooding remains exceptionally high, particularly in low-lying areas and regions adjacent to rivers and other riparian zones. This caution is crucial as communities strive to navigate and recover from the immediate and long-term impacts of this natural disaster.
