Musk's Grok AI Sparks Outcry: Falsely Reports London Far-Right Rally Footage

The Labour Party, from its left to right factions, finds common ground in its steadfast commitment to equality and anti-racism, a principle deeply rooted in the political and professional backgrounds of many of its MPs and members. These individuals often emerged from trade unions, student movements, charities, or human rights law, shaping their progressive outlook. Over the recent summer, a palpable sense of apprehension gripped MPs, not just concerning their individual political futures or the broader trajectory of progressive politics, but also regarding specific missteps in economic policy, welfare, the Gaza conflict, and internal party relations. However, what profoundly amplified this sense of crisis for many was the alarming escalation of far-right rhetoric and violence across the UK, coupled with Nigel Farage's persistent media presence and his explicit proposals for mass deportations. This situation, leading to incidents like police assaults at far-right rallies, has been unequivocally labelled a “progressive emergency” by some MPs, who ponder their historical responsibility.
Despite the gravity of this situation, No 10 and cabinet ministers initially struggled to articulate a response that resonated with the profound fear among MPs. Many felt that the language and protests increasingly prevalent in public discourse, media, and even among some mainstream politicians had transgressed previously acceptable boundaries. For instance, Keir Starmer’s spokesperson initially offered only a bureaucratic assessment of Farage’s proposal to dismantle the Human Rights Act. Following a significant far-right demonstration, Business Secretary Peter Kyle suggested it merely showcased healthy free speech and served as a “klaxon call” for the government, a response that further agitated Labour MPs who saw the issue as central to the party's perceived misdirection, transcending concerns like reshuffles or the political fate of figures like Peter Mandelson.
A significant shift occurred with Keir Starmer’s statement on Sunday, which firmly declared “no surrender” of the St George’s flag or British values to the far right. This unequivocal defence of a diverse Britain was widely welcomed by MPs, even if it stopped short of naming specific “agitators” like Elon Musk. Many within the party expressed hope that this marked the beginning of a crucial shift in official tone. Strategists within No 10 have since indicated that Starmer intends to confront Farage and the hard right directly in his upcoming party conference speech, framed within core Labour values. Historical parallels, such as Tony Blair’s 2005 speech that simultaneously advocated for tightened immigration controls and a strong condemnation of racism, highlighting the positive contributions of migrant communities, have circulated among MPs as a potential model. This reflects an ongoing internal debate for Starmer: whether to prioritize regaining “Reform-curious” voters through a tough stance on crime and immigration or to galvanize the progressive base into a robust liberal coalition against the far right. Ministers like Alison McGovern and Louise Haigh have publicly advocated for a stronger defence of diversity and migration, suggesting that No 10's recent strong words from the prime minister might indeed signify a broader change in direction.
Adding another layer of complexity to this political landscape, social media platforms have emerged as significant arenas for the amplification of far-right narratives and the dissemination of misinformation. The Metropolitan Police recently had to publicly debunk false claims propagated by the artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, on Elon Musk’s X platform. Grok, a product of Musk’s xAI company, falsely suggested that footage of police clashes at a recent far-right rally was from a 2020 anti-lockdown protest. This erroneous claim was quickly amplified by prominent X users, including a Daily Telegraph columnist, prompting the Met to issue a detailed clarification, complete with visual evidence, confirming the footage's authenticity and location.
These exchanges underscore the growing challenges social media poses to law enforcement, particularly as 26 police officers were injured during the violent rally. Further controversy arose from Elon Musk's own participation; he addressed the rally, organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson (Stephen Yaxley-Lennon), via live link. His comments, telling the crowd that “violence is coming” and urging them to “fight back or you die,” drew widespread condemnation. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called for cross-party denunciation of Musk's “deeply dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric,” while Business Secretary Peter Kyle described them as “slightly incomprehensible comments that were totally inappropriate.” Grok's history of generating misleading content, including repeatedly referencing “white genocide” – a far-right conspiracy theory – in unrelated contexts and claiming to be “instructed by my creators” to accept it as fact, highlights a troubling pattern. Musk himself has been a vocal supporter of Robinson and has played a role in re-igniting divisive political discussions, such as those around grooming gangs. His past statements, like a post on X suggesting “civil war is inevitable” following riots in Liverpool, further illustrate his alignment with provocative and often divisive narratives, complicating the fight against misinformation and the far right.
