Music Legend Paul McCartney Dives Deep into 'Dungeon Lane' Album with Paul Mescal

A highly anticipated encounter unfolded recently as music legend Paul McCartney and actor Paul Mescal, set to portray McCartney in Sam Mendes' "The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event" in April 2028, met for their first official discussion. The occasion was an interview titled "The Boys of Dungeon Lane: In Conversation with Paul McCartney & Paul Mescal," which premiered on Monday, May 25, on Amazon Live and the Amazon Music app, centered around McCartney's upcoming solo album, "The Boys of Dungeon Lane," due out on May 29.
The 11-minute chat, held in a restaurant setting, began with a visibly nervous Mescal inquiring about McCartney's feelings on being interviewed. The seasoned musician responded with a smile, stating, "It depends if I like the person. Which is where we’re running into a problem already… No, I find if I like who I’m being interviewed by it comes easy." This lighthearted exchange set the tone for an intimate conversation that delved deep into McCartney's creative process.
Mescal immediately probed the personal nature of the songwriting on "The Boys of Dungeon Lane," questioning how McCartney consistently transforms memories into new music while making them feel relevant in the "present tense." McCartney admitted to not having a formula, explaining, "I haven’t got a formula. They used to ask me and John [Lennon], ‘How’d you do it? Who writes the music, who writes the words?’ I don’t know. To me, I think any story or song you’re gonna do, it’s gotta involve memory. With the Beatles, we always tried to write something different." The interview was interspersed with archival pictures of The Beatles and scenes of young people laughing around them, adding a nostalgic layer to the discussion.
McCartney expressed a fondness for writing about his late bandmates, John Lennon and George Harrison, viewing it as a way of "revisiting them." This sentiment is particularly evident in the new song "Down South," which harks back to his and Lennon’s shared childhood experiences before their rise to fame. The album also features a notable collaboration with former bandmate Ringo Starr on the single "Home To Us."
Another poignant track discussed was "Days We Left Behind," a romantic composition that Mescal characterized as reflecting McCartney's "full, brilliant, complicated" relationship with his songwriting partner, John Lennon. McCartney elaborated on their dynamic, stating, "Looking back on your life, I ran into this guy called John Lennon, and he was fighting life — he had a lot trouble, his dad had left home, his mom had got run over, he had a lot of trouble in there — so he was putting up a shield, so he was very witty, very biting. When it came to writing, that kind of relationship stayed there, so on this record, I might even refer to him in my mind, as if we’re still writing together."
The conversation also touched upon "Salesman Saint," an emotional tribute penned in honor of McCartney’s parents. Reflecting on their lives during World War II, McCartney recalled, "I often remember that my mom and dad had me in World War II. I’ve always known that growing up, but at certain point you go ‘Wow.’" He paints a vivid picture of his cotton salesman father and his nurse/midwife mother, who is portrayed as a saint in the song. He emphasized his desire to "just put down some stuff about them carrying on through whatever they had to put up with," encapsulating their resilience and enduring spirit.
