MTN Pulls Plug on Ayoba Super App, Forges Unified Digital Future

MTN Group has commenced a gradual phase-out and eventual shutdown of its Ayoba super app, once envisioned as Africa’s answer to global messaging giants like WhatsApp. This strategic move is part of the telecommunications conglomerate's broader effort to establish a unified digital platform, aiming to integrate connectivity, content, services, and everyday digital experiences into a single, seamless ecosystem for its customers.
The decision to sunset Ayoba, which is already underway in selected markets including South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Mali, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Botswana, stems from a routine review of MTN’s digital services portfolio. MTN stated that this new approach will significantly reduce fragmentation across its various digital touchpoints, promising a more consistent and enhanced digital experience for its user base. Users in affected regions have been directly informed through in-app notifications and updated terms and conditions.
Ayoba, launched by MTN in 2019, was conceptualized as an "African super app" mirroring the comprehensive functionality of platforms like WeChat. It offered a wide array of services beyond standard messaging, including text communication, voice notes, media sharing, voice calls, group chats, news updates, sports content, entertainment features, and mobile money transactions facilitated by MTN MoMo. A significant draw for MTN customers was the provision of free data in select markets, alongside an SMS continuity feature that ensured messages could reach non-Ayoba users via traditional SMS.
Despite its ambitious vision and aggressive growth strategy, Ayoba's journey saw varied success. Adoption was notably swift post-launch, reaching one million active users in less than a year and two million by mid-2020. This growth accelerated further, with approximately 20 million active users by the end of 2022, 25 million in early 2023, and 28 million by mid-2023, before peaking at around 35 million by the end of 2023. MTN had initially set an ambitious target of expanding Ayoba's user base to 100 million across Africa, leveraging its extensive network presence and free data offerings to rival established messaging platforms.
However, the app ultimately struggled to compete effectively with dominant global messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram, which benefit from strong network effects and deep user loyalty. The "phased sunset" highlights the inherent challenges telecommunications companies face in building proprietary alternatives that can attract and retain enough users to justify sustained investment against such entrenched competition. This struggle, coupled with the desire to streamline its digital offerings, prompted MTN to refocus its efforts on areas where it holds stronger market traction, including core connectivity services, fintech solutions, and infrastructure development.
The shutdown timeline indicates that the Ayoba app was removed from app stores on March 20, 2026. Prior to this, a 30-day window starting February 20, 2026, was provided for users to download the app one last time, primarily to retrieve any personal data or messages. After March 20, users who uninstall the app will be unable to reinstall it. The complete phase-out is subject to necessary regulatory approvals in the relevant markets. MTN has not yet disclosed specifics regarding the fate of Ayoba’s individual features or whether they will be integrated into its forthcoming unified digital platform.
