MTN Crushes Target: 300 Million African Subscribers Achieved Early!

MTN Group, a leading telecommunications company, has proudly announced reaching a significant milestone of 300 million subscribers across its various African markets. This achievement, disclosed during its annual Ambassadors Appreciation Dinner event, signifies that the company has successfully met its “Ambition 2025 strategic target” of serving 300 million customers. MTN Group emphasized that this feat is a powerful testament to its unwavering dedication to digitally connecting Africans and enhancing financial inclusion across the continent.
During the event, which hosted diplomats, senior officials, CEOs, and executive members from across MTN’s markets, MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita urged all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and investment in support of Africa’s digital transformation. He underscored the critical importance of Africans uniting for partnership, particularly at a time when foreign aid, on which many African countries depend, faces increasing uncertainty. Mupita articulated that MTN Group’s continued ability to digitally connect the continent exemplifies this broader objective, stating, “The time is now for Africa to take charge of its own socioeconomic progress. We need to look within for solutions and to develop our own communities.”
The company’s subscriber growth trajectory has been consistent, with its first half 2025 financial report in August showing a 4.7% growth in its subscriber base, reaching 297.7 million. Just two months later, MTN successfully attracted at least 3 million new subscribers across its 16 markets in Africa, propelling it past the 300 million mark. This milestone not only solidifies its position as a leading telecoms company in Africa but also serves as robust proof of its extensive network’s capability to digitally connect homes in both rural and urban communities.
Mupita specifically extended his praise to the company’s dedicated employees, known as MTNers, for their commitment and resilience in overcoming challenges. He highlighted the significant energy invested in the annual “21 Days of Y’ello Care” campaign, through which employees collaboratively worked to extend digital and financial inclusion across diverse communities, particularly those that are underserved. “We celebrate our Y’ello Care employee volunteers and take inspiration from their can-do attitude. We also celebrate their dedication, which has led to the Group meeting a strategic milestone by serving more than 300 million customers in a mere three decades since the start of our first commercial operation in South Africa,” he added.
Furthermore, the group chairman acknowledged the invaluable efforts of the diplomatic community for their continuous partnership and support in fostering and implementing innovative ideas. Mupita stressed that partnership is the fundamental essence of achieving Agenda 2063, a comprehensive plan rolled out in 2013 by the African Union, aimed at transforming Africa into a globally competitive continent through inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development. MTN believes that by digitally connecting African homes, the objectives of this ambitious agenda will be realized.
Aside from the monumental 300 million customer milestone, the telecoms company also garnered significant recognition for several of its subsidiaries. MTN Nigeria, for instance, received a Special Mention Award for the remarkable scale and innovation of its Y’ello Boxes and MoMo Market Storm initiatives. These initiatives were lauded as crucial tools for driving both financial and digital inclusion, particularly for women, traders, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Moreover, MoMo, MTN’s mobile money platform, emerged as the winner of the inaugural Platform Business Award, recognizing its digitally-driven solutions in bridging financial gaps.
Further demonstrating its widespread impact, MTN Uganda was honored with the SEA Region Award for its success in expanding digital inclusion through the establishment of computer labs and solar-powered health centers. The Eswatini subsidiary also received top honors from its government for effectively integrating MoMo to deliver essential public services and foster digital literacy among its population. In Cameroon, the company earned the WECA Region Award for its community-driven digital centers, which empower citizens to co-create local solutions and significantly strengthen innovation at the grassroots level.
On the financial front, MTN Group reported robust growth in its H1 2025 financial statement. The company experienced a substantial 22.4% increase in service revenue, primarily fueled by strong performances in key markets such such as Nigeria and Ghana. This impressive financial outcome underscores MTN’s ability to effectively navigate challenging macroeconomic conditions, including stabilizing inflation and forex rates in its core operational territories. Headline earnings per share (HEPS) dramatically soared by over 350% to 645 cents, marking a significant rebound from a 256-cent loss reported in H1 2024. This strong performance positions MTN squarely within its guided range, reflecting disciplined execution and remarkable operational resilience.
