Mozambique's National Carrier LAM Soars Towards Revival with Ethiopian Airlines Power

Mozambique is taking a significant step in aviation as its government engages with Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest and most successful carrier.

Talks focus on modernising Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) through pilot training, operational expertise, and potential Ethiopian-operated domestic flights.

Ethiopian Airlines previously operated Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines from 2018 to 2021, connecting Maputo to nine domestic destinations.

That venture ceased, but both sides now see renewed value in collaboration, leveraging lessons from the previous attempt and Ethiopian’s expansive Vision 2025 strategy.

LAM faces long-standing fleet constraints, financial challenges, and operational downsizing. Consultancy firm Knighthood Global has been brought in to advise on restructuring and aircraft selection.

Simultaneously, a forensic audit of LAM’s accounts over the past decade is underway, which may reduce the airline’s current staff of approximately 800, highlighting the urgent need for revitalisation.

The Mozambican government, as majority shareholder, has reaffirmed its commitment to LAM’s growth, aiming for financial viability and modernized services.

A strengthened carrier is expected to increase passenger numbers, boost tourism, expand cargo services, and attract foreign currency.

Ethiopian Airlines brings unmatched credibility and practical expertise, known for its wide network, pilot training, aircraft maintenance, and route development skills. Leveraging this experience can accelerate LAM’s transformation into a competitive operator, especially on underserved domestic and regional routes.

The partnership reflects a broader trend in African aviation: carriers are increasingly pursuing collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the continent rather than operating in isolation.

Joint ventures, training programs, and strategic alliances are becoming key to sustainable growth.

For travel professionals, LAM’s restructuring is a development to watch closely. Mozambique offers pristine beaches, wildlife reserves, and rich cultural experiences, but these opportunities remain underutilized without reliable domestic air connectivity.

A revitalized LAM, supported by Ethiopian Airlines, could transform regional travel and open new business opportunities for agents throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
