Mohbad's Legacy Under Fire: Widow Fights to Protect Late Singer's Estate
Omowunmi Aloba, the widow of the late Nigerian music sensation Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad, has taken decisive legal action to safeguard her deceased husband's estate. She filed a comprehensive legal notice at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, aiming to prevent any unauthorised attempts to assume control over Mohbad's assets and legacy. This proactive measure, reported by The Nation Newspaper, was formally documented in a letter dated November 19, 2025, meticulously prepared by the esteemed law firm Salawu, Akingbolu & Co. and duly signed by I. P. Awo (Esq.).
In her strategic filing, Ms. Aloba officially informed the Probate Registrar that she had submitted crucial documents, specifically Form 5 and Form 6. These submissions are designed to ensure that Letters of Administration, which grant legal authority over an estate, cannot be issued to any individual or entity other than the legally recognised beneficiaries of the deceased. The legal notice further reinforced Ms. Aloba's standing, explicitly identifying her as Mohbad's legitimate wife and the mother of his only surviving child, Liam Aloba. To bolster this protective measure, public notices supporting the move were concurrently published in two prominent national newspapers in November 2025, serving as a clear warning against any 'surreptitious or fraudulent attempts' to lay claim to the estate without adhering to due legal process.
Ms. Aloba's legal team has affirmed that this significant filing remains actively registered within the court's records, emphasizing that its directives must be respected and honored until the estate is properly and lawfully administered. They have also expressed strong confidence that no improper or illegitimate claims will be entertained by the court, especially given the undeniable presence of the late singer's legally recognised wife and son.
The backdrop to these legal proceedings is Mohbad's untimely death on September 12, 2023, which occurred under deeply controversial circumstances. His passing triggered a wave of nationwide outrage, prompting a police-ordered exhumation of his remains and intense public scrutiny. This tragic event has since led to ongoing legal proceedings and a protracted coroner's inquest that has stretched throughout 2024 and 2025, continually bringing the complexities surrounding his death and estate into the public eye.
Since Mohbad's passing, persistent tensions have simmered and occasionally flared between his widow, Omowunmi Aloba, and his family. These disputes primarily revolve around the control of his substantial property and, more contentiously, the paternity of his only son, Liam Aloba. Mohbad's father, Joseph Aloba, has been a vocal proponent, repeatedly demanding a DNA test for Liam. This demand has been met with firm opposition from Ms. Aloba, who views it as harassment and insists that any such process must strictly adhere to lawful and established procedures.
The legal landscape shifted further in September 2025 when the Magistrate's Court in Ikorodu issued an order for DNA tests to be carried out on Liam Aloba. Following this court directive, Ms. Aloba has publicly engaged in a heated exchange of words with her father-in-law, Joseph Aloba, predominantly through a series of posts on her Instagram account. In these public statements, she has explicitly asserted her belief that Mr. Aloba's attempts to manipulate the DNA results will ultimately prove unsuccessful, further highlighting the deep-seated discord within the family over this contentious issue.
