Miracle in Oyo: Kidnapped Pupils and Teachers Rescued, Political Leaders React

The harrowing 56-day captivity of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers, abducted from the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, concluded with their successful rescue by security agencies. This incident, which tragically resulted in the deaths of a teacher and a commercial motorcyclist during the attack, and for whom President Bola Tinubu assured justice for victims, including Mr. Oyedokun, who was reportedly murdered by the abductors, sparked widespread concern across the nation.

The victims were taken from Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, when armed bandits stormed the institutions. During the period of their abduction, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa revealed that the abductors were using the schoolchildren as bargaining tools, demanding the release of some of their commanders who were in military custody. The bandits had also issued threats to kill the victims if security forces attempted to move closer to their hideouts, intensifying the pressure on rescue efforts.

The successful rescue operation was a meticulously coordinated joint effort involving the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force. The Presidency confirmed that all victims were freed without any negotiation or prisoner exchange, a significant achievement given the kidnappers' demand for the release of a suspected kingpin who remains in custody. During the operation, eight suspected kidnappers were apprehended and are currently in DSS custody, while several others were neutralised. This decisive action by the security agencies was widely commended for achieving the safe return of the victims without collateral damage.

Reacting to the development, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed profound relief and gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the military, the police, and the DSS. Governor Makinde highlighted the unusual timing of the abduction, which occurred just hours after he publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. He noted that his administration had not experienced such an incident in its preceding seven years in office prior to May 15, describing the successful operation as a major relief that ended weeks of anxiety for the people of Oyo State.

President Bola Tinubu, delighted by the outcome, lauded the security forces for their heroic efforts and precision. While celebrating the rescue, he conveyed regret over the trauma endured by the children, their teachers, and their families. President Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would pursue justice for the victims and for the family of Mr. Oyedokun. He also commended the Oyo State Government for its collaborative efforts throughout the rescue mission and charged it to bolster security measures around schools to prevent future occurrences.

The Allied People’s Movement (APM) and its senatorial candidate for Oyo Central Senatorial District, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, described the rescue as a “major relief” and a “day of thanksgiving.” They praised the professionalism, resilience, and coordinated efforts of the security agencies and Governor Makinde’s exemplary leadership. APM specifically stressed the imperative of maintaining school security as a national priority, ensuring that no Nigerian child or teacher should face the threat of insecurity while pursuing education. Similarly, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed immense joy and gratitude, emphasizing the critical need for stronger security architecture and a governmental commitment to protecting lives and property, ensuring every child can learn in a safe environment.

In a video obtained after their release, Mrs. Alamu Folawe, the principal of Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele, conveyed heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the security operatives, acknowledging their commitment and efforts that ensured their survival. This sentiment of relief and appreciation resonated across the state and the nation.

While the safe return of the victims sparked widespread celebration, all stakeholders unanimously underscored the need to build on this success by implementing more proactive and effective security measures. Calls were made for sustained collaboration among all levels of government, security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, and residents to strengthen security around educational institutions and vulnerable communities, aiming to eradicate such criminal activities and foster an environment of peace and safety for all.
