Middle East Airspace Closures Trigger Widespread Flight Disruptions
Air travel across the Middle East is facing major disruptions as airlines extend suspensions due to regional airspace closures. South African Tourism and Ethiopian Airlines have issued guidance to affected travelers, emphasizing safety.
South African Tourism is working with airports, airlines, and authorities to monitor cancellations. Passengers are advised to contact airlines or travel agents before making travel plans, with a focus on rebooking or alternative arrangements.
Flights operated by Emirates and Qatar Airways have been specifically impacted, leading to cancellations at O.R. Tambo, Cape Town International, and King Shaka International airports.
Airports Company South Africa confirmed the disruptions are linked to UAE airspace closures, reflecting the scale of regional turmoil.
Ethiopian Airlines has halted flights to Middle Eastern destinations including Amman, Beirut, Tel Aviv, Doha, Kuwait City, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and Dammam.
The airline is offering options for rebooking, rerouting, or full refunds, prioritizing passenger convenience.
The travel disruptions follow a surge in regional conflict triggered by a U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran, with Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting UAE sites. Reports indicate 58 people were injured, including at least one Ethiopian national, while UAE defenses intercepted hundreds of missiles and drones, heightening concerns for travelers.
