Middle East on Edge: UAE Accuses Iran Amid Nuclear Plant Strike, Trump Warns Tehran

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reported a drone attack near its Barakah nuclear power plant, which it attributes to Iran or one of its regional proxies. The incident, described by the UAE as a “dangerous escalation”, resulted in a fire just outside the plant, though officials confirmed no injuries or radiation alerts. The emirate’s nuclear regulator affirmed there was no radioactive leak or risk to the public, despite the proximity of the attack to critical infrastructure.

This event occurred during a period of extreme tension, specifically in the sixth week of a ceasefire in the ongoing Iran war, where peace talks have stalled. US President Donald Trump publicly expressed his impatience with the deadlock, stating on Truth Social, “For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” According to reports, Trump met with national security advisers to discuss options and also spoke with Benjamin Netanyahu prior to an Israeli security cabinet meeting focused on Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza, fueling speculation about a potential restart of the Iran war if no compromise is reached.

In response to the attack, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan engaged in discussions with other regional states, including Saudi Arabia, which condemned the drone strike. The minister also informed Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), about the details of the drone strike, asserting the UAE’s full right to respond to such “terrorist attacks”. The IAEA, through a social media post, conveyed Grossi’s “grave concern about the incident” and emphasized that “military activity that threatens nuclear safety is unacceptable”.

The UAE has historically been a hawkish voice among Gulf states regarding military action against Iran and has reportedly tightened its partnership with Israel during the conflict. It has also been noted to have retaliated for previous Iranian attacks on its oil infrastructure with airstrikes on Iranian facilities, indicating a pattern of assertive responses to perceived threats.

Further details from the UAE’s defence ministry specified that the drone targeting the Barakah plant was one of three that “entered the country from the western border direction”. It struck “an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Al Dhafra area”. Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the source of these attacks, with updates promised upon their completion.

Anwar Gargash, an Emirati presidential adviser, firmly stated his conviction that Iran or a regional proxy was responsible. He described the “terrorist targeting of the Barakah clean nuclear power plant” as a “dangerous escalation” and a “dark scene that violates all international laws and norms”, condemning the perpetrators for their disregard for civilian lives and international legal standards.
