Meta's Big Bet: AI Device Startup Limitless Joins the Empire

Limitless, the AI startup previously known as Rewind, has officially announced its acquisition by Meta. The company, widely recognized for its AI-powered pendant designed to record conversations, confirmed on Friday that it will cease sales of its hardware devices. Existing Limitless customers will continue to receive support for one year, with their subscription fees waived as they transition to the Unlimited Plan.
Alongside discontinuing pendant sales, Limitless will also wind down other functionalities, including its non-pendant software, "Rewind," which enabled users to record and create searchable logs of their desktop activity. The startup—co-founded by Brett Bejcek and Dan Siroaker, who also co-founded and previously led Optimizely—pivoted into AI hardware manufacturing just last year with the launch of its $99 Limitless pendant, a wearable device that could be clipped onto clothing or worn as a necklace.
The acquisition comes after Limitless acknowledged the growing difficulty of competing with major industry players, including OpenAI and Meta, who are simultaneously developing their own AI hardware ecosystems. In its announcement, Limitless said it shared Meta’s vision to “bring personal superintelligence to everyone,” a mission that includes the expansion of AI-enabled wearables. This suggests that the Limitless team will now support Meta’s existing wearable initiatives—such as Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta AR/AI glasses—rather than producing a new pendant.
Meta confirmed the acquisition, stating, “We’re excited that Limitless will be joining Meta to help accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables.” The company added that the Limitless team will be integrated into the wearables division within Reality Labs. Prior to being acquired, Limitless had raised over $33 million from prominent investors including a16z, First Round Capital, and NEA.
Customers will be given options to export or delete their data through the Limitless app as the transition moves forward.
