Maverick's Return: Tom Cruise's Next 'Top Gun' Sequel Is Finally Cleared for Takeoff!
Tom Cruise is set to return for Top Gun 3, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing and Ehren Kruger penning the script. Following the monumental success of Top Gun: Maverick, the highly anticipated sequel faces uncertainties regarding its director and supporting cast as it gears up to continue the legendary aviation franchise.
After its predecessor, Top Gun: Maverick, saved the global box office in 2022, Tom Cruise is set to return and pilot the new film, Top Gun 3, which will spearhead Paramount's newly merged film slate. The announcement of Tom Cruise's return was made at CinemaCon earlier this year, ensuring the iconic actor will once again strap in for another high-flying adventure.
Super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who successfully produced both the original 1986 Top Gun and its 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, will also be joining the production. Ehren Kruger, one of the three co-writers responsible for the Maverick screenplay, has been reported to be penning the script for the upcoming sequel, aiming to maintain the narrative quality of the highly praised second installment.
However, many details surrounding Top Gun 3 remain slim and unconfirmed. It is currently unclear who will star alongside Cruise in the new film. Furthermore, the director for the sequel has not yet been announced. Joseph Kosinski, who has a strong working rapport with Cruise, having directed him in both Maverick and the science fiction actioner Oblivion, may not be available. Kosinski is reportedly set to direct a UFO conspiracy thriller by Zach Baylin and "Miami Vice '85," a big-screen reboot starring Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan. It is also uncertain whether any other cast members from Maverick, such as Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, or Miles Teller, will be returning for the third installment.
The original Top Gun, directed by the late Tony Scott from a script by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., was loosely based on a magazine article about the Navy's real-life Top Gun fighter academy. It centered on the hotshot pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and his relationships with his best friend and flight officer Goose (Anthony Edwards), his rival pilot Iceman (Val Kilmer), and civilian aviation expert Charlie Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). This film was a monumental success, making $360 million USD and becoming the top-grossing movie of 1986.
The sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, saw an older and more experienced Maverick navigating an uncertain future. After a career setback, Iceman, who had become an Admiral, reassigned him to teach at Top Gun. In this film, Maverick rekindled an old romance with bar owner Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly) and became an unlikely mentor to Rooster (Miles Teller), the rebellious son of his late best friend, Goose. Maverick surpassed its predecessor's success, making an astounding $1.5 billion, and is widely credited with reviving the post-pandemic box office, solidifying the franchise's commercial viability.
With its impressive legacy of box office success and critical acclaim, the development of Top Gun 3 is highly anticipated. While a release date has not yet been announced, fans are eager for future updates on this continuation of the iconic franchise.
