Marvel Shocker: Famke Janssen Confirms No Jean Grey Return Talks

Famke Janssen, the acclaimed actress known for her portrayal of Jean Grey in the Fox-era “X-Men” films, has stated that Marvel has not extended an invitation for her to return to the iconic role. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Janssen elaborated on how frequently her past role as Jean Grey becomes a central topic of discussion during interviews, often overshadowing other subjects. She remarked, “It’s interesting. I didn’t realize that was such a big part. Every interview I do, that will come up, and of everything I say, that is going to be the only thing that’s gonna be printed.”
Janssen first brought Jean Grey, also known as Phoenix, to life in the 2000 film “X-Men.” She subsequently reprised the character in several sequels, including “X2: X-Men United” in 2003 and “X-Men: The Last Stand” in 2006. Her appearances also extended to brief cameos in “The Wolverine” (2013) and “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (2014). Despite the passage of time, Janssen expressed a sense of flattery regarding the character's lasting impact. “I should be flattered, I suppose, that this character has resonated with people,” she added, noting that it is “nice that people are still talking about her.” She anticipates that discussions around Jean Grey will continue to arise with the release of any new films related to the franchise.
Interestingly, a new “X-Men” reboot is currently in development under the Marvel banner, with “Thunderbolts*” director Jake Schreier confirmed to be at the helm. Schreier recently offered a glimpse into his vision for the upcoming movie during an interview with The Playlist. He indicated that the new “X-Men” film will be “recognizably different from what came before.” Schreier also highlighted the unique opportunity to “explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material,” describing it as a “very rare and fortunate opportunity” and “very exciting.” This new project signifies Marvel’s intent to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved mutant team.
