Mandalorian & Grogu Saga Expands: Jon Favreau Drops Epic New Chapter!

The Star Wars franchise has a rich and enduring legacy of integrating toys and merchandise with its cinematic releases, a tradition that continues to thrive. Many fans' initial encounter with iconic characters like Boba Fett in the original trilogy was through his action figure and the extensive marketing campaign surrounding Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. This deep-rooted connection between the films and their tangible representations ensures that toy tie-ins remain a cherished aspect of the franchise for enthusiasts worldwide.
In anticipation of the forthcoming release of The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, Lucasfilm recently hosted an exclusive event in New York. Collider was among the invited media outlets, offered a special preview of the expansive range of new merchandise tailored for Star Wars devotees. A highlight of this celebration was an intimate fireside chat featuring Bobby Kim, the new Creative Director for Merchandise, and Jon Favreau, the acclaimed creator of The Mandalorian series. Their discussion delved into the philosophy behind the new merchandise line and the fundamental connection between Star Wars narratives and the world of collectible toys.
During the conversation, Kim encouraged Favreau to elaborate on his personal history with the franchise, tracing it back to his childhood experiences of watching the films in theaters and engaging with the action figures. Favreau articulated the symbiotic relationship, stating, "For Star Wars, there's always been that conversation between the two... So it feels very organic. One leads into the other." He further shared his particular "thrill" from working on The Mandalorian streaming series, recounting the emergence of the "Grogu/Baby Yoda phenomenon." Favreau revealed that, at the time, the creative team deliberately kept Grogu's existence a secret, which meant a delay in the production of his merchandise. Fans had to patiently await the arrival of those beloved Baby Yoda plushies. However, with this new launch, fans can rejoice in an abundance of Grogu-themed options.
The event showcased a diverse array of merchandise, ensuring there is truly "something for everyone." Beyond the anticipated Grogu toys, the display included universal Star Wars merchandise such as spirit jerseys for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, various lightsabers, a new series of sunglasses, and more. The main focus, however, was dedicated to the upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu. To preserve the film's secrets, much of the unveiled merchandise centered primarily on Din Djarin and Grogu, depicted in different ships, various toy forms, and costumes. Enthusiasts will also be pleased to find a significant presence of Babu Frik among the new offerings.
The excitement surrounding the new merchandise serves as a prelude to the cinematic debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu. This Sci-Fi Adventure Action film is slated for release on May 22, 2026. Jon Favreau takes the helm as director and also contributes to the writing, alongside Dave Filoni. The movie is set to be followed by Dave Filoni's Untitled Mandalorian Movie. The cast features notable actors including Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin / The Mandalorian, Steve Blum as Zeb, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and Jonny Coyne as Warlord.
