Man of Steel Returns! New Superman Series Gets Official Summer Launch Date

Upon assuming creative control of DC several years ago, James Gunn made a deliberate choice to launch the feature film aspect of his new universe with Superman. This decision was notable given Gunn's prior success in transforming lesser-known comic book characters, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy, into global phenomena. While the new universe did begin with some B-roll characters in "Creature Commandos," the prominence of Superman as the lead for the feature film side of the DCU proved to be a critical and commercial success. Gunn is slated to continue his work with the Super family this summer with a Supergirl project, starring Milly Alcock, who was first introduced opposite David Corenswet last year.

Superman holds a prominent position in the upper echelon of comic book characters, distinguished by his widespread popularity compared to many others featured alongside him in various media. He is joined in this high tier of comic book notoriety by other DC icons like Batman, and even Marvel characters such as Spider-Man and Wolverine, underscoring his universal appeal.

One of the most praised, albeit underrated, Superman projects of recent years has been "My Adventures with Superman," the HBO Max original animated series. This series features Jack Quaid, known for his role as Hughie in "The Boys," as the voice of the titular character. "My Adventures with Superman" aired for two seasons in 2023 and 2024, and after a hiatus of nearly two years, exciting news has broken: Season 3 is set to return to HBO Max on June 13. The new season will delve into a story arc focusing on the "Reign of Supermen."

Looking ahead, James Gunn’s official Superman sequel, titled "Man of Tomorrow," is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 9, 2027. This film is currently in production and will feature the return of David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The narrative will see the unlikely duo forced to team up against a grave new threat, Brainiac, who will be portrayed by Lars Eidinger. Additionally, Aaron Pierre, who is slated to star as John Stewart in the upcoming "Lanterns" series this summer, will also have a role in "Man of Tomorrow." Fans can stream the first two seasons of "My Adventures with Superman" on HBO Max and stay updated with Collider for more news and coverage concerning James Gunn’s evolving DCU.
