Maguire’s Late Header Lifts Manchester United to 2-1 Win Over Liverpool, Deepening Anfield Crisis

Red Devils Triumph: Man Utd Shocks Liverpool, Maguire Seals Anfield Crisis
Manchester United secured a significant 2-1 victory over Liverpool FC at Anfield, marking Rúben Amorim’s first back-to-back Premier League wins as United manager and plunging Liverpool into crisis with their fourth straight loss in all competitions.
This triumph was United’s first winning goal at Anfield since January 2016, sealed by Harry Maguire with a late header.
The match began at a blistering pace as Bryan Mbeumo gave United a dream start, scoring after just 62 seconds from a setup involving Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes.
Despite this setback, Liverpool gradually grew into the contest, with Cody Gakpo denied twice by the woodwork before leveling the score in the 78th minute from a Federico Chiesa assist.
United defender Maguire then capped an outstanding display by heading home a Fernandes cross in the 84th minute, silencing the Anfield crowd.
For Amorim, this victory represents a possible turning point after what had been described as an 11-month nightmare since leaving Sporting CP.
Having endured a Europa League final defeat and United’s worst-ever Premier League finish, his job security had been under scrutiny.
This win, arguably the biggest under his tenure, not only delivered three crucial points but showcased United’s most organized and disciplined performance yet.
Casemiro’s experience anchored the midfield, while Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Mason Mount provided consistent attacking threat.
Crucially, United withstood Liverpool’s fierce second-half pressure, a stark contrast to their previous collapses under stress.
Conversely, Liverpool’s defeat deepened their slump into a full-blown crisis, marking their first four consecutive losses since November 2014.
Despite the international break, Arne Slot’s side appeared no closer to solving their defensive vulnerabilities.
Liverpool have now conceded 11 goals in the league this season more than any other team in the top eight.
Defensive frailty was evident as Milos Kerkez struggled at left-back, leaving Virgil van Dijk exposed and Ibrahima Konaté outjumped for Maguire’s winner.
The absence of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, sidelined with a hamstring injury, was keenly felt, with deputy Giorgi Mamardashvili unable to prevent Mbeumo’s early strike.
Liverpool’s attack also faltered, despite striking the post three times and creating multiple chances.
Gakpo’s late miss and Mohamed Salah’s uncharacteristic wide shot summed up their wasteful evening in front of goal.
Questions are now being raised over Salah’s form and confidence as Liverpool’s poor run threatens to derail their title challenge.
