Music icon Madonna and her daughter, Lola Leon, have shared insights into their deeply emotional collaboration on the song "The Test," featured on Madonna's latest album, "Confessions II." The duo discussed the creative process during an interview on Thursday, July 2, with Bob the Drag Queen, part of the "iHeartRadio and TikTok LIVE Premiere With Madonna" event.

Leon, 29, revealed that the idea for their first official musical team-up originated from her. She explained that while a profound love exists between a mother and daughter, there are also "a lot of things that are unspoken," including "tension and emotions that kind of are difficult to put into words, because it can be so emotional." Leon saw art as a bridge for these complex feelings, noting, "A way that I thought would be easier for us to speak about these things would be maybe through art, which is always something that my mom and I have connected over. That’s really brought us together."

Madonna described the songwriting experience as "a very magical moment," emphasizing the mutual vulnerability required from both artists. In "The Test," Madonna reflects on the profound impact her global fame had on Leon, who was the inspiration behind the "Ray of Light" album and just nine years old when the "Confessions on a Dance Floor" era began in 2005. Lyrically, Madonna expresses regret over the unintended consequences of her celebrity, singing, "You didn’t ask for all the flashing lights... I didn’t think of how it could disturb/ Or how it hurt/ I wish I knew the pain I’ve caused/ My butterfly was always being watched."

Adding another layer of emotional depth to the collaboration, Leon shared a personal anecdote about a dream she had of her maternal grandmother just before entering the studio. Though the specifics of her grandmother's words were unclear, Leon felt her presence strongly. This dream prompted reflections on how their lives and relationships might have differed if her grandmother were alive, questions that "will always be unanswered." Leon viewed the experience as "a really beautiful way to honor her and heal each other through her eyes, kind of as a spirit."

When asked about mustering the courage to approach her mother for the collaboration, Leon asserted she wasn't nervous. "Not really," she stated, adding a candid observation about her mother's formidable personality: "She’s a very intimidating person and I have found that I’m not intimidated by many people as a result of her being my mom." Lola Leon, who records under the name Lolahol, made her musical debut with the single "Lock & Key" and her "GO EP" in 2022. Born in 1996 to Madonna and dancer/fitness trainer Carlos Leon, she is also a model and dancer, having graduated from the University of Michigan in 2018 with a focus on dance.

"Confessions II," Madonna’s 15th studio album, features a total of 16 tracks and includes collaborations with other notable artists such as Sabrina Carpenter, Feid, Martin Garrix, and Stromae. Prior to its official release on Friday, July 3, Madonna partnered with iHeartRadio and TikTok for an exclusive premiere event. The "iHeartRadio and TikTok LIVE Premiere With Madonna" streamed on Thursday, offering fans worldwide an early listen to the album. Viewers could access the stream via @tiktok, @madonna, and @iheartradio, with over 200 iHeartRadio stations across the U.S. also broadcasting the event simultaneously.
