Macri Crowned King: Anthony Macri Dominates 42nd Kings Royal Race
The 42nd Kings Royal, a prestigious event within the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series, concluded on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, with Anthony Macri of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, clinching the coveted crown and a staggering $200,000 top prize. Macri's victory was a dominant performance, as he led all 40 laps from his outside front-row starting position, showcasing remarkable control and skill throughout the race.
Despite leading from start to finish, Macri's path to victory was far from easy. He faced relentless pressure from formidable competitors like Rico Abreu and Kyle Larson, especially in the closing stages of the feature event. Macri also battled a bent Jacobs ladder on his sprint car, an issue that made the vehicle a handful, particularly in dirty air. Post-race, Macri was visibly emotional, reflecting on his journey from the humble beginnings of his career to standing on one of motorsport's biggest stages as a Kings Royal winner, calling the achievement "badass." Abreu ultimately secured the runner-up position, with Larson, Brian Brown, and David Gravel rounding out the top five finishers.
This year's Kings Royal proved to be a defining moment that challenged pre-race discussions, which largely focused on the rivalry between World of Outlaws and High Limit Sprint Car Series drivers. Instead, it was stars from outside these established organizations who seized the spotlight. The event truly belonged to the Pennsylvania Posse, with Macri leading a strong contingent that delighted their passionate fanbase. Notable performances included Ryan Smith's impressive run and Danny Dietrich's heat race win. The Midwest and Great Lakes regions also made their mark, with Brian Brown securing a strong top-five finish and 19-year-old Kasey Jedrzejek shocking many by winning his heat race and earning the pole position for the main event.
Macri's personal growth as a driver has been a significant narrative leading up to this victory. Known for being soft-spoken and reserved off the track, he transforms into a formidable force behind the wheel. His journey has seen him navigate challenges such as a brief separation from his family-owned team, filling in for Tyler Courtney under immense scrutiny, and making the Knoxville Nationals final. His return to the family operation and commitment to more frequent road trips have undeniably contributed to his development. At just 26 years old, Macri is still far from his peak potential, and his success was met with genuine happiness from his competitors, including Abreu and Larson.
The event also highlighted a notable shift in sprint car racing dynamics, as drivers from outside national touring series are increasingly becoming legitimate contenders for major event victories, moving beyond a historical dominance by World of Outlaws drivers. Furthermore, despite a weekend plagued by violent crashes and extensive discussions about safety, the Eldora Speedway track staff delivered a "tremendous racing surface" for Saturday's finale. Even a mid-afternoon rain shower couldn't derail the quality of racing, as the track was rolled tightly in anticipation of rain, resulting in a wide surface that allowed drivers to use both the top and bottom lanes effectively throughout the evening, improving significantly from earlier conditions.
However, the Kings Royal weekend was not without its concerns, particularly regarding injuries to top drivers from the High Limit Sprint Car Series. Brad Sweet, Aaron Reutzel, and Tyler Courtney, who were the top three in High Limit points, all required hospital visits during the event. While Sweet's condition remained undisclosed, both Courtney and Reutzel are potentially facing extended periods out of action. These injuries have significant implications for the High Limit Series' overall championship and its mid-week money series, opening doors for other contenders like Rico Abreu, Brent Marks, and Justin Peck. The upcoming event at Lernerville Speedway will be closely watched to see how these developments impact the remainder of the 2025 season and who might step in as fill-in drivers.
