Liverpool's Unstoppable Streak: Europe's Longest Unbeaten Run Before Bournemouth Clash
Going into their match against Bournemouth, Liverpool held the longest unbeaten run among Europe's top five leagues, a performance that seemingly masked underlying issues. However, the dramatic 95th-minute winner by Amine Adli for Bournemouth starkly exposed the problems that had been somewhat obscured by their impressive 13-game undefeated streak.
Liverpool, led by Arne Slot's side, are now facing a significant slump, having gone winless in their last five Premier League matches. This sequence comprises four draws and one defeat. Beyond a draw against Arsenal, the other four games were against teams like Leeds, Burnley, Fulham, and most recently, Bournemouth, indicating struggles even against less formidable opponents.
The team that once romped to the title last season is perceived as having lost its formidable aura and is "no longer feared." Their performance against Bournemouth highlighted significant deficiencies, including erratic defending and a predictable approach in attack.
Pundit Alan Shearer commented on this decline, stating on Match of the Day, "From Bournemouth's point of view, they would have looked at Liverpool and thought 'why can't we beat them?' Arne Slot's side look miles off the team we saw last season." Shearer further criticized, "Liverpool just don't look right in all areas. They're making too many errors and are weak defensively, as we saw with the winning goal. While they scored two goals from set-pieces, they didn't create anywhere near enough from open play." This analysis underscores the widespread concern regarding the team's current state across both defensive and offensive aspects.
