Legends Unite! Aretha Franklin, Neil Young to Grace Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame

Aretha Franklin, a monumental figure in music history, continues to receive posthumous accolades, with her upcoming induction into The Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame on March 24 marking another significant honor. This latest recognition adds to a long list of distinctions, including her groundbreaking induction as the first woman into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy, and the esteemed Kennedy Center Honors, among many others.
Eight years after her passing at age 76, Franklin joins a distinguished group of 11 other music greats as part of this induction class, bringing the total to 12 honorees. Collectively, these inductees boast an impressive 30 Grammy Awards, a total significantly boosted by Franklin’s own 18 Grammys, alongside countless other accolades. A special ceremony is planned to celebrate these artists, inviting inductees and their families to the Boch Center Shubert Theatre in Boston.
The public is invited to delve deeper into the lives and careers of each nominee through a new exhibit, 'Legends of Folk, Americana Roots Music, 2025 Class,' currently on display at the Boch Center Wang Theatre. The induction class comprises five living artists: Jackson Browne (77), Neil Young (80), Tom Rush (84), Judy Collins (86), and Tom Paxton (88). The seven posthumous inductees include Mississippi John Hurt (passed in 1966), Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1973), Muddy Waters (1983), John Hammond (1987), Alan Lomax (2002), Leonard Cohen (2016), and Aretha Franklin (2018).
J. Casey Soward, president & CEO of the Boch Center and home of the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame, emphasized the profound impact of these artists, stating, 'These inductees represent the heart and soul of Folk, Americana, and Roots music. They gave voice to ordinary people and helped shape the soundtrack of this country; its struggles, its hopes, and its beauty. Through this induction and our Legends exhibit, we’re honoring the songs, stories, and spirit that continue to move and unite us.'
Further cementing the legacy of these artists, the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame is inaugurating a permanent Legacy exhibit within the Boch Center Wang Theatre. This exhibit will showcase iconic artifacts from each inductee, notably including the guitar Stephen Stills used to compose 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' and subsequently gifted to Judy Collins, as well as handwritten lyrics penned by Tom Paxton for Mississippi John Hurt. This exhibit is currently open for viewing during all Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame tours and prior to concerts.
The Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame operates as a cultural and educational initiative of the Boch Center, with curation by the Museum Collective. The inductees for what the text identifies as 'The 2026 Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame' are presented across three categories:
Living Artist: Honoring contemporary performers whose initial impact on the genre was at least 25 years before the induction year. This category includes Jackson Browne, Judy Collins, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, and Neil Young.
Legacy Artist: Recognizing performers whose initial impact on the genre was at least 45 years prior to the induction year. This category comprises Leonard Cohen, Aretha Franklin, Mississippi John Hurt, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Muddy Waters.
Industry/Non-Performer: Celebrating individuals whose creative or technical contributions significantly shaped the sound and legacy of American music. Inductees in this category are John Hammond and Alan Lomax.
