Legal Blow for Malik Beasley: Judge Orders Staggering $1 Million Payment to Former Agency!

A federal judge in New York has issued a $1 million civil judgment against NBA free agent Malik Beasley. The judgment, handed down by Judge Jeannette A. Vargas, found Beasley liable for $1 million in damages, plus interest, to be paid to his former agency, New York-based Hazan Sports Management. The ruling highlighted that despite receiving ample warning, no objections were filed by Beasley, nor was any request made for an extension of time to object.
The contract dispute originated from Beasley's departure from Hazan Sports in February 2025, which the agency alleged was a violation of their agreement. Hazan Sports Management further stated in the lawsuit that it attempted to recoup a $650,000 marketing advance provided to Beasley. However, the agency reported receiving only minimal, sporadic payments and vague promises regarding the repayment of the remaining balance.
No attorney is listed for Beasley on the lawsuit, and the court docket indicates no action taken on his part. Attempts by ESPN to contact Beasley for comment were unsuccessful, with a person associated with him hanging up when asked. An attorney representing Hazan Sports did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Malik Beasley has had a nine-season career in the NBA, playing for several teams including the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Detroit Pistons. He experienced a resurgent season in 2025 and was reportedly on track to sign a three-year contract worth $42 million with the Pistons. However, his name subsequently surfaced in a federal gambling probe. While Beasley has not been charged in connection with the gambling case, the NBA announced in September that it was conducting its own investigation into the matter. Steve Haney, who represents Beasley in the gambling investigation, confirmed that his client is "fully cooperating" with the NBA's probe, but noted he was not involved in the Hazan Sports suit.
Most recently, Beasley signed with the Puerto Rican basketball team Santurce Crabbers, a team owned by artist Bad Bunny.
