Leeds United Smashes Nottingham Forest! Farke Hails 'Massive Win' Amid Aina's Disappointing Milestone
)
Leeds United secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Premier League relegation rivals Nottingham Forest at Elland Road, a result hailed as a "massive win" by manager Daniel Farke. This triumph pushed Leeds nine points clear of the bottom three, significantly bolstering their survival hopes.
The home side established control with two quickfire goals in the first half. Jayden Bogle netted his first top-flight goal for Leeds, followed just four minutes later by Noah Okafor, putting Leeds in a commanding position. Dominic Calvert-Lewin extended Leeds' lead early in the second half, registering his 10th league goal of the season, effectively sealing the win. Forest's new signing from Napoli, Lorenzo Lucca, managed a late consolation header for the visitors in the 86th minute from an Omari Hutchinson cross, but it proved to be too little, too late.
Daniel Farke expressed immense pride in his team's performance, particularly given the circumstances. He noted the difficulty of responding after their previous 4-0 loss to Arsenal, stating, "a loss always does something with the confidence and belief." Farke emphasized the heightened stakes of the game, describing it as one that felt "just a bit more important than other games" due to its implications for both teams' league positions. He lauded his side's "spirited performance," "intensity to be so dominant," and ability to play "such a good football game," anticipating that the win would significantly boost the team's confidence, belief, and spirit.
Farke specifically praised midfielder Ilia Gruev and winger Noah Okafor. He highlighted Gruev's "unbelievably sharp" training performance throughout the week, describing his match contribution as "pretty close to a 10 out of 10," with two assists and many key passes. Okafor also received commendation for one of his best performances in a Leeds shirt, showcasing his ability to take on players, score goals, and deliver assists, alongside excellent defensive work.
Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche acknowledged that Leeds deserved their win. He admitted his frustration at conceding "such a poor goal" just as his side was beginning to ask questions of Leeds, particularly after weathering Leeds' fast start. Dyche also pointed to the third goal as the one that "really kills you," but found a positive in his team's persistence, noting they "kept on going and kept on going" despite the setback.
The defeat dealt a blow to Nottingham Forest's survival hopes, leaving them one place and six points above the relegation zone. With this result, Forest and Leeds are now level on 26 points. Adding to the narrative, Super Eagles defender Ola Aina made his 100th Premier League appearance for Nottingham Forest during the match. This was his seventh appearance since returning from injury, and despite being one of Forest's better players, he was unable to prevent the defeat or inspire a clean sheet. Taiwo Awoniyi, who recently scored against Brentford, was an unused substitute for Forest, with Igor Jesus leading the line.
