LeBron James Fires Back: 'Don't Care' About Buss Report Criticisms

After an ESPN story detailed an allegedly strained relationship between LeBron James and Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss, James spoke out following a 112-104 loss to the LA Clippers. He downplayed the significance of the report, stating that he had already achieved his goal of “restoring excellence” to the Lakers by winning a championship and expressed indifference to anyone’s feelings about him, including Buss’s, at this stage of his career.
The ESPN report, authored by Baxter Holmes, explored Buss family dynamics and the franchise’s eventual sale to billionaire Mark Walter. It suggested discord between Buss and James dating back to his arrival in 2018, including alleged resentment over James being viewed as a “savior” rather than the Lakers being praised for acquiring him. The fallout from the failed Russell Westbrook trade was highlighted as a source of tension, with sources claiming Buss “privately mused” about not offering James a contract extension in 2022 or even trading him to the Clippers.
James Defends His Legacy and Role
James offered his perspective, describing his relationship with Buss as professional and respectful. “I thought it was good, but, you know, somebody could see it another way. It’s always two sides of the coin,” he said, emphasizing his loyalty and long tenure with the Lakers. He noted that he rarely communicates one-on-one with team owners, citing his past experiences with Dan Gilbert and Mickey Arison.
At 41, James expressed a dismissive attitude toward media narratives: “I don’t really care about the reports, to be honest… there’s always going to be another article tomorrow, especially involving me.” He stressed that his focus upon joining the Lakers was to restore the franchise’s culture of success, which he believes he achieved with the 2020 NBA championship in the Orlando bubble, dedicated to the late Kobe Bryant.
Buss and Lakers Organization Show Support
In response to the ESPN story, Jeanie Buss defended James in a statement to The Athletic, saying it was unfair to drag him into family drama and affirming her appreciation for his contributions. She reinforced this support symbolically by updating her Instagram profile with a photo of her embracing James after the 2020 title. Lakers coach JJ Redick echoed Buss’s sentiment, stating, “Everybody in this organization appreciates LeBron… he’s done it with class.”
With the NBA trade deadline approaching in two weeks, James, who holds a no-trade clause, was asked whether he intended to finish the season with the Lakers or consider a move. His response was succinct: “I’m good. I’m good.”
