Kwara Political Shake-Up: APC Governorship Primary Postponed!

The All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary election in Kwara State, initially scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026, has been officially postponed to Friday, May 22, 2026. This significant development was announced through a statement issued by the state publicity secretary of the APC, Alh. Abdulwaheed Babatunde. The abrupt nature of the postponement meant that many participants were still actively engaged in casting their votes in various wards at the time of the announcement, seemingly unaware that the exercise had been halted.
Investigations beyond the official statement revealed that the sudden disruption of the primary was orchestrated by certain aggrieved gubernatorial aspirants within the state chapter of the party. These aspirants were reportedly jolted by an earlier announcement made by the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on Tuesday. Governor AbdulRazaq had publicly declared Ambassador Yahaya Seriki, from Kwara Central, as his preferred successor. While the governor had clarified that his endorsement of Seriki would not preclude other aspirants from participating in the primary, his choice evidently sparked discontent among some contenders.
Impeccable sources indicated that the aggrieved aspirants saw the postponement as a crucial opportunity to restrategize. Their objective was reportedly to consolidate support, potentially rallying behind an aspirant of Kwara South origin, to present a unified challenge against Seriki. Further findings suggested that Ambassador Yahaya Seriki was leading significantly in most of the voting centers before the primary election was abruptly called off, adding weight to the speculation that the postponement was a direct response to his strong performance.
The official notification regarding the shift in date was terse and to the point, originating from the Office of the State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Kwara State Chapter. It read as follows: “This is an official notice from the Office of the State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Kwara State Chapter. The APC Governorship Primary earlier scheduled to hold today, Thursday, 21st May 2026, has been postponed. The new date for the Governorship Primary is now Friday, 22nd May 2026. All aspirants, and party faithful are advised to take note. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
