Kwara Church Kidnapping Tragedy: Five Worshippers Die in Captivity After Failed Ransom Negotiations

A deadly abduction in Omugo community, Oro Ago District of Kwara State has ended in tragedy, with at least five worshippers reportedly dying while in captivity after being kidnapped during a church service.
The victims were taken on March 22, 2026, when armed gunmen stormed an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) service in Ifelodun Local Government Area and abducted about eight congregants into surrounding forests. The incident has left the community in deep mourning.
Among those confirmed dead is Rachel Oluwaremilekun Omole, wife of the church pastor, alongside several prominent community members including elders and chiefs. Reports indicate that news of their deaths was relayed by one of the abductees, Sunday Bakare, who escaped after more than a month in captivity.
He allegedly informed families that the victims died after prolonged detention, with some said to have been denied access to essential medication. The kidnappers initially demanded a ₦1 billion ransom, later reducing it to ₦150 million during negotiations.
Despite relatives reportedly paying around ₦20 million along with additional supplies requested by the abductors, the captives were not released. Three victims are still believed to remain in captivity, while families continue to await further updates amid ongoing uncertainty.
Local security coordination officials and church representatives have confirmed receiving reports of the deaths, although full official confirmation from state authorities is still pending. Security agencies are said to be continuing rescue operations to locate the remaining abductees and track down those responsible for the attack, as concerns grow over worsening insecurity in rural communities across the region.
