Kenya Mourns & Mobilizes: Iten Marathon Supports Mudslide Victims

The 2025 Iten International Marathon, set for November 30, will serve as both a memorial for the victims of the devastating Elgeyo Marakwet mudslide of November 2, 2024, and a platform to promote climate resilience. The disaster claimed over 37 lives, displacing numerous families and causing widespread damage in landslide-prone areas of the county.
Deputy Governor Prof Grace Cheserek officially launched the event in Iten, emphasizing that the marathon will honor those lost while supporting rehabilitation efforts across degraded escarpments. The race will include a fun run to engage the public and raise awareness of climate change, described by officials as a key factor in the severity of the disaster. Prof Cheserek assured participants that the race will maintain its traditional course from Chororget to the town center, providing both a scenic and symbolic journey.
Sports executive Michael Kibiwott outlined the theme, “Iten International Marathon Running for Climate Resilience,” connecting it directly to the mudslide victims. He revealed the county’s ambitious plan to plant 30 million trees across vulnerable escarpments, with the marathon acting as a catalyst for long-term environmental recovery.
Relief efforts for the mudslide survivors are also ongoing. The Manu Chandaria Foundation, in partnership with Standard Media Group, donated food valued at Sh1 million to communities in Chesongoch, Murkutwa, Kabetwa, and Embobut. County Secretary Lazarus Chebii praised the swift response of donors, noting that the maize flour will provide critical support to families who lost homes and livelihoods.
Health and education support remains a priority. Health Executive Committee Member Monica Rotich highlighted the urgent need for psychosocial care, noting that 15 patients treated at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital are now receiving ongoing counseling at Tambach rescue centers. Additionally, Chesongoch Primary School has been converted into a temporary health facility, staffed by 250 personnel and treating over 900 victims, with officials warning of potential disease outbreaks due to poor sanitation. County Executive Member for Education, Purity Koima, appealed for donations of school supplies to support children affected by the disaster.
Standard Group Plc, serving as the marathon's media partner, reaffirmed its commitment to establishing the event as a premier race in Kenya, emphasizing its ongoing collaboration with the county since the marathon’s inception.
