Kamala Harris's 2028 Ambitions: Midterm Campaign Fuels Presidential Speculation

Kamala Harris is embarking on an extensive final fall campaign blitz to bolster fellow Democrats, with a midterm schedule that, by Election Day, will have included visits to multiple early presidential primary states on the Democrats’ 2028 calendar. This strategic itinerary fuels ongoing speculation about whether the former vice president plans to seek the White House again, following her loss in the 2024 general election to Donald Trump.

Harris has consistently stated in recent interviews that her immediate focus is on helping Democrats secure victories in the upcoming November elections. However, she has not definitively ruled out another presidential campaign. In a fundraising email sent to donors via her Fight for The People PAC, Harris emphasized the challenges faced by the American people due to “the cruelty and corruption of this current administration,” urging supporters to be “ruthless in delivering for the people: on affordability, on fighting corruption, and on making our voices heard.” This fundraising effort is specifically aimed at supporting her travel for these campaign events.

Her expanded closing stretch, scheduled from October 21 to October 30, will encompass crucial stops in New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Mississippi, in addition to a virtual event for Florida. These newly added locations complement her previously announced late October appearances in Georgia and Nevada. The tour is specifically designed to support nominees for governor and U.S. Senate, often pairing Harris, the first Black woman to serve as vice president, with candidates who could also make history.

The campaign begins on October 21 in Nevada, which is slated to host the second 2028 presidential nominating contest after South Carolina. Here, Harris will campaign with Aaron Ford, the state’s first Black attorney general, who is now campaigning to become its first Black governor. She also plans to meet with members of the Culinary Workers Union. On October 22, Harris will travel to Mississippi to support Scott Colom, a candidate who, if elected, would be the state’s first Black U.S. Senator since the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. Colom has recently garnered increased attention from national Democrats as he faces Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.

From Mississippi, Harris will proceed to New Hampshire on October 24, a state that holds the third position in Democrats’ 2028 primary order. In New Hampshire, she will campaign with Senate nominee Chris Pappas and engage in a discussion focused on reproductive care and abortion rights. As vice president, Harris was a leading advocate for abortion rights within the Biden White House, particularly during the 2022 midterm campaign. On October 26, Harris and Wisconsin gubernatorial nominee David Crowley will campaign together.

Harris will conclude her late October schedule with a three-day swing through Georgia, commencing on October 28. Her engagements in Georgia include campaigning with Sen. Jon Ossoff, attending voter protection events, and speaking at the Fulton County Democratic Party’s annual gala in Atlanta on October 30. While in Georgia, she will also headline a virtual organizing event with Florida Senate nominee Angie Nixon, who aims to become her state’s first Black U.S. Senator. Nixon, a state lawmaker identifying as a democratic socialist, draws significant support from left-flank activists who had criticized Harris as too moderate in 2024, highlighting a notable pairing of the Democrats’ liberal establishment with one of its most progressive nominees.

This extensive itinerary builds upon previous in-person and online campaign appearances, fundraisers, and voter protection and organizing events that Harris has helped lead, including those for the Democratic National Committee. Most recently, she campaigned in Michigan for Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, another notable progressive Democratic nominee, and delivered a speech at an NAACP event, further showcasing her commitment to supporting diverse candidates and mobilizing Democratic voter bases.
