Kaizer Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season on Tuesday night, losing 3-1 to Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium. The loss ended Amakhosi's unbeaten run and prevented them from claiming the top spot in the league, a golden chance that was instead seized by Sekhukhune, who now lead the standings.
Sekhukhune United, dubbed 'Babina Noko', wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Bradley Grobler opened the scoring for the visitors in just the fifth minute, finishing at the far post after a cross from Tsepo Matsimbi. This early setback was significant, as Kaizer Chiefs had previously been the only side in the league not to concede a goal. However, Amakhosi responded eight minutes later when Flavio da Silva capitalized on a loose ball in the box, pouncing from close range to level the score. This marked da Silva's second goal in as many league games.
The second half saw Sekhukhune United pull away decisively. Bradley Grobler secured his brace in the 50th minute, reclaiming the lead for his side. Just six minutes later, Thabang Monare added a third goal, sealing a comprehensive victory for Sekhukhune. Despite late pressure from Kaizer Chiefs, Sekhukhune's defense held firm, leaving 'The Glamour Boys' frustrated. This statement win propelled Sekhukhune United back to the top of the Betway Premiership standings, two points clear of champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The defeat left Kaizer Chiefs in third place after six matches. Following the match, disappointed Amakhosi fans took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration. Tweets highlighted concerns over coaching decisions and player combinations. Kaizer Chiefs will now look to bounce back in their upcoming fixture. They are set to compete in the CAF Confederations Cup first preliminary round first leg match against Angolan side Kabuscorp on Saturday, September 20, at 17:00 (SA time).
