K-Pop History in the Making: HUNTR/X Eyes Groundbreaking Grammy Triumph!

HUNTR/X, the dynamic trio from Netflix’s acclaimed KPop Demon Hunters, is poised to potentially rewrite Grammy history with their smash hit “Golden.” Currently enjoying its eighth consecutive week atop the Billboard Hot 100, “Golden” has been entered for several prestigious Grammy Awards, with nominations set to be announced on November 7. Should it receive a nod for Record of the Year, it would mark a groundbreaking moment as the first K-Pop hit ever to achieve such a distinction.
Beyond its K-Pop significance, HUNTR/X could also become only the second animated act in history to secure a nomination in the coveted Record of the Year category. The only other animated act to do so was The Chipmunks, whose iconic Hot 100-topping song “The Chipmunk Song” earned a Record of the Year nomination at the inaugural Grammy Awards in 1959. That historical nomination went to their creator, Ross Bagdasarian Sr., known by his stage name David Seville. “The Chipmunk Song” also secured wins for Best Recording for Children and Best Comedy Performance, contrasting with “Golden,” which is a contemporary pop mainstream hit.
The success of “Golden” on the Billboard Hot 100 is also remarkable for an animated act. When the song logged its fifth week at No. 1, it became the longest-leading hit by an animated act in the chart’s 67-year history. This surpassed previous records held by The Archies with “Sugar, Sugar” (four weeks in 1969) and The Chipmunks with David Seville and “The Chipmunk Song” (four weeks in 1958). “Golden” represents the ninth song rooted in Korean pop to reach the pinnacle of the Hot 100, and notably, it is the first by female lead vocalists with direct ties to the genre. HUNTR/X members EJAE and REI AMI were born in Seoul, South Korea, while the third member, Audrey Nuna, hails from New Jersey.
In addition to its significant potential for a Record of the Year nomination, “Golden” is also vying for awards in other key Grammy categories, including Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Best Music Video. The industry had previously anticipated similar Record of the Year close calls for K-Pop powerhouse BTS with their hits “Dynamite,” “Butter,” and “My Universe” (a collaboration with Coldplay), all of which were nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The potential recognition for “Golden” would underscore a major shift and growing influence of K-Pop on the global music stage.
