Justice for Victim: Police Fire Four Officers After Fatal Motorist Shooting

Four police officers implicated in the fatal shooting of Anthony Obodo, a student and motorist, during a police pursuit in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, have been officially dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, made this announcement at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, stating that the dismissed officers would also face criminal prosecution.

This disciplinary action follows an investigation into Mr. Obodo’s death, which established the officers’ clear complicity in the incident.

Commissioner Adepoju further explained that the officers underwent an orderly room trial, which resulted in their recommendation for dismissal.

An inspector, Solomon Nwogu, who is also allegedly involved in the incident and remains at large, is expected to face the same disciplinary process once apprehended.

The tragic incident occurred on August 27 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Officers from the Agip Division in Port Harcourt were returning from a special duty assignment at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium when they observed a black, fully tinted Lexus vehicle.

The patrol team, led by an assistant superintendent, attempted to stop the vehicle. However, the vehicle reportedly sped off, attempting to evade inspection, which prompted the police team to initiate a pursuit.

During the ensuing chase, Corporal Alfred Louis discharged his firearm at the vehicle, striking Mr. Obodo. He sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately rushed to a hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead.

Following the incident, the three members of the patrol team present were promptly arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department to facilitate investigations. Authorities also launched efforts to apprehend Inspector Solomon Nwogu, who reportedly absconded after the shooting.

Commissioner Adepoju emphasized the Rivers State Police Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, adherence to human rights, and the protection of life and property. He unequivocally stated, “Where allegations of misconduct are made against police operatives, we’ll not shield any officer found to have acted outside the law under my watch.”

He assured the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally, fairly, and objectively to ensure that justice is served. The Commissioner also extended his sincere condolences to Mr. Obodo’s family during their difficult period, reiterating the command’s resolve to secure justice.

This development comes amidst widespread demands for justice from Mr. Obodo’s family and the public, all seeking accountability for the circumstances surrounding his death.

The police commissioner’s announcement represents the command’s definitive stance on the case, with the affected officers now facing both internal disciplinary measures and impending criminal proceedings.
