Italy's 'Miracle' Wine Fountain: Free Sips on a Sacred Route

Italy, a country celebrated globally for its exquisite cuisine, iconic historical ruins, breathtaking architecture, and as an essential European travel destination, offers an unparalleled experience. Beyond its stunning, often overlooked islands and the renowned wine region of Tuscany, Italy captivates with its rich culture, undeniable charm, and a constant sense of excitement waiting to be discovered. The nation's allure has been significantly enhanced by a unique and appealing addition: a permanent, free-to-drink wine fountain installed in the Abruzzo region.
This extraordinary feature, aptly named the `fontana del vino`, continuously flows with locally produced free red wine. It is strategically situated in Caldari di Ortona, a location chosen specifically to serve as a refreshing treat for pilgrims embarking on the Cammino di San Tommaso. This popular pilgrimage route stretches over 190 miles, connecting Rome to Ortona, making the free-flowing wine a perfect and welcome reward during such a demanding journey.
The installation of this free-to-drink red wine fountain, the first permanent fixture of its kind in the area, was a thoughtful initiative by the Dora Sarchese winery in 2016. Housed within a distinctive mock wine cask, the fountain is conveniently located just a few miles before the culmination of the Cammino di San Tommaso. The vineyard's owner's intention behind this generous gesture is to provide pilgrims with a final, encouraging push to complete their arduous trek, though visitors are kindly encouraged to limit themselves to one glass per person to ensure availability for all.
The concept for the Caldari di Ortona fountain drew inspiration from a similar wine fountain encountered during a pilgrimage to the tomb of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, a significant stop on the Camino de Santiago. Adding to its appeal, the `fontana del vino` was designed by the acclaimed Italian architect Rocco Valentini, rendering it not just a practical and delightful stop for wine, but also an admirable piece of artwork. Both pilgrims and tourists are welcome to enjoy a complimentary glass of local wine during the vineyard's operating hours: Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The vineyard remains closed on Sundays. For those planning a trip to this beautiful land of delicious wine, unrivaled pizza, and endless beauty, it is always beneficial to learn a few essential Italian words and phrases to enhance the travel experience.
