Infiniti's New Sport Sedan Channels Iconic G35 Vibes: A Comeback Story?

Infiniti, Nissan's luxury arm, is embarking on a significant rebuilding journey under the leadership of Tiago Castro, vice president of Infiniti Americas. Despite past speculation about its future and current low sales volumes, the brand is committed to a strategic revitalization plan, starting with a new product introduction each year. The overarching goal is to re-establish Infiniti as a primary alternative luxury brand, emphasizing unique products, targeted segments, and exceptional client experience.
The product offensive begins in 2026 with the introduction of the new Infiniti QX65 SUV. This model, a two-row iteration of the mainstream QX60 midsize three-row SUV, is expected to closely resemble the QX65 Monograph concept and evoke the spirit of the original FX crossover. Production of the QX65 is slated for Nissan’s Smyrna plant in Tennessee, marking an important step in refreshing Infiniti's SUV lineup.
Following the QX65, 2027 will see the highly anticipated launch of a new sport sedan. This vehicle aims to recapture the enthusiast appeal of the revered G35, a model customers have long desired to see return. Castro confirmed that the new sedan will feature rear-wheel drive and is even being considered for an optional manual transmission, a rare offering in today's luxury market. While it will be a low-volume, inspirational model designed for driver enjoyment and performance rather than just straight-line speed, it signifies Infiniti's return to its dynamic roots. The sedan will prioritize high horsepower and sport sedan dynamics, and while its specific platform remains unconfirmed, platform sharing with Nissan models, potentially the aging FM platform used by the Nissan Z, is a business consideration. The naming strategy will follow current Infiniti conventions, not necessarily starting with 'G'.
In 2028, Infiniti plans to introduce a two-row compact hybrid SUV. This vehicle will utilize Nissan’s advanced e-Power powertrain, which uses a gasoline engine solely as a generator to recharge the battery, a technology already proven in Europe and Japan. This North American version will be specifically engineered for more power, cost-effectiveness, and highway efficiency, building on the platform of the 2026 Nissan Rogue. With standard all-wheel drive, this hybrid SUV will combine quiet, premium propulsion with robust performance. Also destined for production at the Smyrna plant, this hybrid is projected to be a significant volume driver, contributing to Nissan's ambitious target of selling 100,000 Infiniti vehicles by 2029, coinciding with the brand's 40th anniversary.
Beyond these core new models, Infiniti is also exploring expansion within its existing lineup, specifically looking at variants of its large, three-row QX80 SUV. Concepts like the QX80 Track Spec (a street performance variant with over 650 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque from a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6) and the off-road-oriented QX80 Terrain Spec overlander were showcased to gauge market reaction. While dealer feedback heavily favored the Track Spec, Castro is evaluating business plans for either or both variants.
Interestingly, plans for a previously announced electric vehicle, intended for production in Canton, Mississippi, have been put on hold. This decision reflects a re-evaluation of market timing given the current slowdown in demand for EVs. Consequently, Infiniti's new models for at least the next three years will feature internal combustion engines, though future powertrain additions are not ruled out.
Castro, who recently took the helm of Infiniti Americas, secured assurances from Nissan leadership that the brand has a definitive future. His strategy emphasizes quality over quantity, aiming for a portfolio of five or six well-executed models in the "right segments." He believes Infiniti doesn't need to be a brand for everyone but rather a compelling alternative that fosters deep customer loyalty. The focus on unique products, exemplary customer service, and a clear brand identity is expected to drive volume and ensure Infiniti's sustained growth and success for years to come.
