India's Tech Giant Reliance Pledges Staggering $110B for AI Future

Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire chairperson of the Indian conglomerate Reliance, has unveiled an ambitious plan to invest ₹10 trillion (approximately $110 billion) over the next seven years to establish advanced AI computing infrastructure across India. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Ambani detailed that this significant investment would fund the development of gigawatt-scale data centers, a comprehensive nationwide edge computing network, and new AI services seamlessly integrated with Reliance’s extensive Jio telecom platform.
Construction of multi-gigawatt data centers has already commenced in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with Ambani confirming that over 120 megawatts of capacity are projected to become operational in the second half of 2026. This monumental pledge by Reliance is a key component of a rapidly growing wave of AI investment sweeping across India. Earlier in the same week, the Adani Group announced its intentions to invest around $100 billion into building AI data centers within the country, while the Indian government forecasts more than $200 billion in AI infrastructure spending over the coming two years.
Global technology firms are also significantly enhancing their presence in India, exemplified by OpenAI's partnership with the Tata Group. This collaboration aims to develop approximately 100 megawatts of AI capacity in India, with plans for an eventual expansion to 1 gigawatt. Ambani underscored the critical importance of this initiative for India’s technological self-reliance, emphatically stating that the country "cannot afford to rent intelligence." He articulated Reliance’s objective to dramatically reduce the cost of AI services, drawing a parallel to the company’s past success in making mobile data highly affordable in the nation.
Ambani further asserted that the primary impediment to AI development today is not a deficit of talent or imagination, but rather the scarcity and prohibitive cost of computing power. The extensive build-out of this AI infrastructure will be robustly supported by Reliance’s substantial green energy capacity, which currently provides 10 gigawatts of surplus power derived from solar projects located in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
Reliance is committed to fostering widespread collaboration, planning partnerships with Indian enterprises, startups, and academic institutions to embed AI functionalities across a diverse range of industries. These sectors include manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. Jio has already forged strategic AI partnerships, notably securing a deal last year with Google to offer free Gemini AI Pro access to millions of its users across India. Furthermore, Ambani announced plans to develop AI capabilities in several Indian languages, a move aimed at accelerating the adoption and accessibility of this transformative technology throughout the country. This aggressive and strategic push clearly highlights the intense competition among India’s largest conglomerates to secure a dominant foothold in what is anticipated to be one of the nation's most significant technological opportunities.
