Ibadan Police Heroics: Robbery Gang Foiled, One Killed in Dramatic Shootout

A notorious two-man armed robbery gang, which had allegedly terrorized the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State, met its end on Wednesday when confronted by the police monitoring team. The gang, described as serial robbers targeting bank customers, engaged law enforcement in a protracted shootout across various parts of the city, including Imalefalafia and Oke-Ado. The incident sparked pandemonium and apprehension among residents. Earlier, at Anfaani, the robbers had waylaid a Muslim cleric, popularly known as Alfa, who was carrying motorcycle parts inside a sack, mistakenly believing it contained cash. After shooting the Alfa, the gang proceeded towards Imalefalafia.
Eyewitnesses, including Seye Adeniyi, reported that people in the area alerted the police at Iyaganku, who then trailed the robbers. The police, acting on gathered information, laid an ambush around the Tribune House at Imalefalafia, where the suspects were believed to be preparing for another operation. One eyewitness recounted seeing the robbers stop at a vulcanizer stand under the pretense of inflating their tires, while the second robber engaged a female POS operator in conversation. Upon sighting the policemen, one of the robbers drew his pistol and opened fire, injuring one of the officers. The police returned fire, and with the collaborative efforts of bystanders, managed to apprehend the robbers after a shootout that lasted several minutes.
During the intense exchange, one of the robbers sustained bullet wounds and died instantly. This individual, believed to be the gang leader, was found carrying a backpack containing a pistol, cartridges, charms, bracelets, live ammunition, and large sums of cash. The other robber, identified as the 'Okada' pilot rider, was critically injured but caught alive after considerable effort. Mr. Olusesi Olusola, another eyewitness, confirmed rushing the injured policeman to a nearby clinic and noted the dead robber put up a significant fight before being overpowered.
A senior police officer, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident, stating that a notorious armed robbery gang had engaged their men in a shootout at Imalefalafia. He noted that while one gang member was killed, the critically injured one was receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital, where officers were monitoring his recovery process. The police expressed hope that information gleaned from the injured suspect would assist their ongoing investigation. The officer concluded by stating that the police had been trailing the gang, responsible for numerous criminal activities in the area, and expressed optimism that this successful operation would put an end to their raids in Ibadan and its adjoining communities. The gang was specifically noted for its serial targeting of bank customers, with assorted charms found on their bodies.
