Hunger Games Star Unveils Secret Ritual Behind 'Sunrise on the Reaping'

Netflix's latest heart-pounding shark movie, "Thrash," directed by Tommy Wirkola, has garnered attention for its intense storyline and challenging production. Collider's Steve Weintraub recently sat down with stars Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou to delve into their experiences on set and discuss their upcoming projects. The film plunges viewers into a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane hitting a small coastal town, bringing not only devastation but also hungry sharks, setting the stage for a brutal and action-packed narrative.
The cast unanimously described the shoot for "Thrash" as extremely cold and wet, with the constant presence of water making it a uniquely demanding experience. Phoebe Dynevor, known for "Bridgerton," shared how the grueling conditions permeated their daily lives, even affecting her post-work routine. She recounted, "On this movie, I couldn't do that because I couldn't bear to be in a body of water after I'd spent all day in a body of water," referring to her usual practice of taking a bath to shed her character. Whitney Peak echoed this sentiment, revealing she would immediately shower in her trailer after wrapping to feel "done" with the day's aquatic immersion. Both actresses noted their fingers would become incredibly "raisined" from the prolonged exposure to water and cold.
Dynevor elaborated on the particularly intense childbirth scene, highlighting the confluence of real-world elements like freezing temperatures, wind machines, and rain machines, which lent an organic reality to her performance. As someone who hasn't experienced childbirth personally, she expressed her obsession with accurately portraying the labor process and the stages of distress. The scene demanded her to convey the terror of battling both the elements and the profound ordeal of childbirth, making it one of the most challenging aspects of her role. She credited her co-star Whitney Peak for mutual support during the difficult shoot.
In contrast to Dynevor and Peak's physically taxing experiences, Djimon Hounsou found "Thrash" relatively "comfortable" compared to his extensive background in action-packed productions. He acknowledged that the on-set elements—rain, overwhelming wind, and simulated infrastructure failure—brought an "organic reality to the story." However, his character's role largely kept him from being submerged in water or directly confronting sharks, as he was "comfortably on the little inflated boat." He playfully deemed it a "cakewalk" in comparison to some of his more grueling past roles.
Beyond "Thrash," the actors also offered glimpses into their highly anticipated future films. Whitney Peak spoke enthusiastically about working on "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," where she portrays Lenore Dove Baird. Joining a cast that includes Joseph Zada, McKenna Grace, Elle Fanning, Josh Hutcherson, and Jennifer Lawrence, Peak praised director Francis Lawrence for his welcoming demeanor and unique approach to filmmaking. She specifically highlighted his method of using music to guide the narrative and mood on set, creating an inspiring and productive environment even when she joined the shoot two months in.
Djimon Hounsou also teased his involvement in Chad Stahelski's "Highlander" reboot. While he described his role as "small but very important," he surprised many by stating he didn't have much action for himself, despite Stahelski's reputation for directing intricate fight sequences. Hounsou confirmed he is slated to have a battle with Dave Bautista, who plays the immortal warrior Sunda Kastagir. He lauded the film's "stunning" set design and expressed his anticipation for Stahelski's overall interpretation of the story, promising a visually spectacular and action-filled experience for audiences. "Thrash" is currently available to stream on Netflix.
