Horror in Michigan: 'Three Devices' Found After Church Shooting Leaves Dead and Injured

A horrific incident unfolded at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday morning, involving a deadly shooting and a deliberately set fire. A 40-year-old gunman rammed his vehicle through the church's front doors, opened fire on hundreds of congregants with an assault rifle, and ignited a blaze. Authorities initially reported one dead and nine injured, with the death toll later updated to two after a second victim succumbed to a gunshot wound in hospital. Several others sustained injuries, some critically, and officials expressed concerns that more victims might be discovered once the extensively damaged scene is fully secured.
The unnamed suspect, identified as a 40-year-old male from nearby Burton, was killed by local police during a shootout. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye indicated that three improvised devices were also discovered at the scene, and investigators believe the fire was intentionally set by the gunman. Photographs from the scene showed the suspect's silver truck, adorned with American flags, lodged in the exterior of the chapel as flames engulfed the structure and smoke filled the air for miles around. Emergency services, including first responders, rushed to assist the wounded.
The motive for this violent rampage remains undetermined, with federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) joining local authorities in the extensive investigation. Chief Renye confirmed that the FBI would be dedicating 100 agents to the area, and investigators plan to execute a search warrant on the suspect's home and comb through cell phone records. The Grand Blanc community, a suburb of Flint located about 50-60 miles northwest of Detroit, was deeply shaken by the events. The incident occurred during a particularly violent weekend across the United States, and notably, it coincided with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mourning the death of its oldest-ever president, Russell Nelson, who passed away at 101 the previous night.
Reactions poured in following the tragedy. President Donald Trump condemned the
