Horrific Highway Carnage: 15 Dead in Nyeri-Nyahururu Crash Sparks Outcry and Urgent Probe!
A tragic accident on the Nyeri–Nyahururu highway has killed 15 people, leaving only two survivors.
The crash happened on Saturday near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County, involving a 14-seater matatu and a lorry.
Four people died at the scene, while 11 others, including a child, later died in the hospital. The incident has left the community in shock.
The crash reportedly happened when a lorry driver swerved to avoid two cyclists, lost control, and moved into the opposite lane.
It then crashed head-on into a matatu coming from Nyeri toward Mweiga/Nyahururu, and the lorry was heading the other way.
Officer Elizabeth Vivi confirmed the accident and the deaths. Rescue teams, including St John Ambulance, arrived quickly, and several injured passengers were taken to hospital in critical condition.
Transport CS Davis Chirchir said a full investigation will be carried out, and he urged all road users to be careful, follow traffic rules, and value safety, reminding everyone that every life matters.
After the accident, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) increased patrols along the Nyeri–Nyahururu road and other highways.
NTSA boss Nashon Kondiwa said the crash was very sad and confirmed that a team has been sent to investigate.
Early reports suggest speeding, reckless driving, and a possibly faulty lorry caused the crash, andIf this is true, it means the accident could have been prevented, making the loss even more painful.
The NTSA is committed to conducting a swift and thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause, including evaluating the condition of the vehicles involved and the conduct of the drivers.
Additionally, the authority will audit the PSV operator and the lorry owner to ensure compliance with safety and licensing regulations.
Director General Kondiwa issued a stern warning to all motorists, especially commercial drivers, against reckless behavior, stressing the deadly consequences of negligence on the roads.
