Homeward Bound: Over 140 South Africans Evacuated from Middle East Land in Joburg

More than 140 South African nationals have successfully returned home following a voluntary evacuation flight that departed from Doha, Qatar. This operation was initiated amid rising tensions across the Middle East. The flight, carrying 143 South Africans, took off from Hamad International Airport at 11:55 local time and safely landed at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 18:54 on Thursday, 12 March.
The South African Embassy in Qatar played a crucial role in the successful coordination of this evacuation. Ambassador Ghulam Hoosein Asmal was personally present at the airport to oversee the final arrangements and the boarding of all passengers. The embassy extended its gratitude to both the Qatari government and Qatar Airways for their invaluable cooperation and assistance in facilitating the safe return of the citizens.
This evacuation effort was prompted by a stern warning issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). DIRCO had urged all South Africans residing in the Middle East to seriously consider leaving the region as security risks were escalating significantly. This warning came after the outbreak of a multi-front conflict in early March 2026, which raised considerable concerns about the safety and well-being of foreign nationals throughout the area.
As part of its advisory, DIRCO recommended that South Africans abroad register their presence on the government’s Travel Smart system and proactively contact South African diplomatic missions for any necessary assistance. According to DIRCO, an estimated 6,400 South Africans had already registered their presence across the Middle East region, highlighting the significant number of citizens potentially affected by the escalating situation.
DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri further elaborated on the demographics of South Africans in the region, stating that the majority are primarily based in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Both countries host well-established South African diplomatic missions, providing support and services to their expatriate communities. Phiri also mentioned that for citizens located in Bahrain, the department was able to provide guidance on alternative exit strategies, including the use of land borders and facilities where feasible, to ensure their safe departure from the region.
