Hollywood Mourns: 'Vice Principals' Star Passes Away at 52

Kimberly Hébert Gregory, the acclaimed actress known for her compelling role in HBO’s series Vice Principals, has passed away at the age of 52. Her death was officially confirmed on October 3, prompting a wave of tributes from colleagues and loved ones. Her ex-husband, actor Chester Gregory, shared a poignant message on Facebook, honoring her as a woman of immense brilliance, intellect, and grace. He wrote, “You Were Brilliance Embodied, / A Black Woman Whose Mind Lit Every Room, / Whose Presence Carried Both Fire And Grace.” He further acknowledged her profound impact, stating, “You Taught Us Lessons In Courage, / In Artistry, In Resilience, / And In How To Keep Showing Up, / Even When Life Demanded More Than Its Share.”
Born in Houston in 1972, Gregory cultivated a life rich in both artistic expression and academic pursuit. She honed her creative talents at The High School for Performing and Visual Arts before delving into psychology at Mount Holyoke College. Her academic journey continued, culminating in a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago. Concurrently with her studies, she established a vibrant career in Chicago theater. Her powerful performance in Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery earned her a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1998, marking an early highlight in her distinguished career.
Gregory’s presence extended significantly into film and television. Her first major film appearance was in Chris Rock’s I Think I Love My Wife. Over the years, she made memorable guest appearances in numerous highly regarded series, including Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order, Two and a Half Men, Gossip Girl, Barry, The Act, Dollface, Better Call Saul, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. However, it was her portrayal of Dr. Belinda Brown, the formidable school principal navigating the antics of Neal Gamby (Danny McBride) and Lee Russell (Walton Goggins) in Vice Principals, that cemented her place in many fans’ hearts. Her ability to seamlessly blend humor, authority, and vulnerability in the role elevated the show’s material and quickly made her a fan favorite.
Her former co-star, Walton Goggins, also paid a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, reflecting on their time together. He remarked, “I had the honor… the good fortune of getting to know, getting to spend months working with this Queen on Vice Principals. She made me laugh like no other. A professional’s professional. A gatdamn SOPRANO that never missed a note.” Kimberly Hébert Gregory’s career was characterized by her exceptional talent for infusing every character with profound depth and soul, whether in comedic, dramatic, or theatrical performances. She is survived by her ex-husband and their son.
