Hip-Hop World Rejoices: Max B Freed After 16 Years, French Montana Shares Emotional Reunion

Harlem rapper Charly Wingate, professionally known as Max B, has officially been released from Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey, on Sunday, November 9. The 47-year-old artist concluded approximately 16 years of incarceration, marking a significant moment for his fans and the hip-hop community.
Max B's legal journey saw him originally sentenced to a daunting 75 years in 2009 for his involvement in a fatal robbery at a New Jersey hotel. However, his sentence was later reduced to 20 years in 2016 after he entered a guilty plea to aggravated manslaughter. His stepbrother, Kelvin Leerdam, was also sentenced in connection with the crime, receiving a life term plus 35 years after jurors found him responsible for the fatal shooting of one of the victims.
Upon his long-awaited release, Max B was met with an emotional reunion by his family and friends. This joyous occasion was notably captured and shared on Instagram by his close friend and frequent collaborator, French Montana. The timing of Max B's homecoming held a special resonance, as it coincided with Montana’s 41st birthday. French Montana expressed his elation on social media, captioning the celebratory video with, "CANT MAKE THIS UP ! MY BROTHER REALLY CAME HOME ON MY B DAY ! HAMDULILLAH. WALKED IT DOWN ! NO MORE FREE YOU."
The "Wavy Crockett" artist had previously hinted at his impending freedom late last year during a phone call feature on The Joe Budden Podcast. During that conversation, he disclosed his official release date and conveyed his palpable excitement about returning to the music scene. He articulated his ambition, stating, "Listen, I’m not even gonna put myself in a box, it’s all gonna run concurrent. I can’t wait to get in the studio. There’s a lot of artists out there, too many to name. I’m looking forward to working with the big names, the head honchos… But they gotta be A-list. If the s—t ain’t A-list, I can’t f—k with it."
Earlier this year, another prominent rapper, Young Thug, had also shared a clip of a phone conversation he had with Max B while the latter was still incarcerated. During their call, Max B affirmed his dedication, telling Thug, "Man, I’m in here grinding this s—t out." When queried about his imminent release, he confidently responded, "Hell yeah, we ’bout to hit the home stretch, baby. We gon' make some history?" These interactions underscore the anticipation and support for Max B's return to both his personal life and his artistic career.
