Highlander Remake Shocker! John Wick Director Casts WWE Champ as Henry Cavill's Brother

Two-time WWE champion Drew McIntyre, known as "The Scottish Warrior," has officially joined the cast of John Wick director Chad Stahelski's highly anticipated Highlander remake. McIntyre will star opposite Henry Cavill, who is set to play Connor MacLeod, in the role of MacLeod's brother, Angus MacLeod. This casting news comes amidst a production delay for the long-awaited film, as Cavill recovers from an injury sustained during pre-production. Once filming commences, McIntyre will be part of an impressive ensemble that also includes Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Max Zhang, and Dave Bautista.
In the original 1986 Christopher Lambert-led Highlander film, Angus was depicted as Connor MacLeod's cousin and the chief of their clan, playing a brief but pivotal role in sparing MacLeod's life and exiling him after his immortality was revealed. With the character now confirmed as MacLeod's brother in the remake, it suggests a potentially closer connection and a more significant presence for Angus in the evolving narrative.
The screenplay, penned by Michael Finch, draws inspiration from the cult fantasy hit, which explores Connor's discovery of his immortality and his subsequent battles with other immortal beings across various historical periods to claim a coveted ability. Director Chad Stahelski has indicated that the remake will primarily depict events leading up to "The Gathering" and will extend into the present day, incorporating extensive lore from the beloved franchise. The epic will span diverse locales, from the 1500s Scottish highlands, where McIntyre's own heritage makes him a fitting addition, to modern settings like New York and Hong Kong.
While primarily recognized for his achievements in professional wrestling, Drew McIntyre has previously ventured into acting. This project marks a reunion for him with Dave Bautista, a fellow two-time WWE champion, with whom he shared the screen in his 2024 feature debut, The Killer's Game. Furthermore, McIntyre has a pre-existing connection to director Stahelski, having previously collaborated with Stahelski's renowned 87Eleven stunt and action team.
Dave Bautista, who ardently lobbied for the role of MacLeod's notorious enemy, The Kurgan (originally embodied by Clancy Brown), shared his profound enthusiasm for the project. In a previous interview, Bautista expressed how "blown away" he was by Finch's script, describing it as a "great reboot" that masterfully pays tribute to the original while simultaneously crafting something new, fresh, and exciting. He highlighted the film's ambitious universe-building, stating it's "so much bigger than the original" and promises action on par with Stahelski's John Wick films, assuring audiences that they "won't be seeing the same thing" if they've seen the original.
The Highlander remake is slated to commence filming in Scotland early next year. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as production progresses on this highly anticipated fantasy epic.
