Heartfelt Reunion: Doobie Brothers' Michael McDonald Connects With Son After Six Decades

Michael McDonald, a prominent member of the legendary band The Doobie Brothers, has reconnected with his long-lost biological son, Michael Goessling, a year and a half ago. Goessling, who is 59 years old and was adopted as a baby, recounted the surreal experience of realizing his biological father was a rock star during a preliminary phone call. He had never known his biological parents until receiving a letter last year informing him of their desire to meet.

Goessling’s first conversation with McDonald took place over the phone. He described being struck by the voice, remarking, “What a voice that guy has!” and noting its familiarity without being able to place it. Eventually, he directly asked, “Are you Michael McDonald?” to which McDonald chuckled and confirmed. The identity of his birth father became even clearer when McDonald mentioned he was a musician with a gig scheduled at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater that very night. A quick Google search revealed that The Doobie Brothers were indeed booked for that venue, solidifying the astonishing connection.

Reflecting on the past year and a half, Goessling expressed that he is still trying to process the incredible turn of events. McDonald had a child with his middle-school girlfriend when he was 14. The young couple made the decision to put the child up for adoption. Following this, McDonald went on to achieve significant musical success, famously replacing Tom Johnston as the lead singer of The Doobie Brothers.

Throughout his illustrious career, Michael McDonald has earned five Grammy Awards and played a pivotal role in the Doobie Brothers achieving a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit with “What A Fool Believes,” as well as other top 10 successes like “Real Love” and “The Doctor.” Despite the circumstances of his adoption, Michael Goessling conveyed to NBC that he never held any resentment towards his biological parents, who he noted are still good friends. He expressed profound gratitude for their choices, stating, “I just wanted to thank them for the choices they made on my behalf and for giving me a shot in this world, and how grateful I was for that. They were always heroes in my story.”
