Heartbreak for Police Officer: Family Lost in Devastating Boxing Day Blaze

A Gloucestershire police officer, Tom Shearman, has paid a profound tribute following the tragic loss of his wife, Fionnghuala, known as Nu, their seven-year-old daughter Eve, four-year-old son Ohner, and the family dog, Hutch. They perished in a devastating house fire that engulfed their cottage in Brimscombe, Gloucestershire, in the early hours of Boxing Day. This immense tragedy has led to an outpouring of grief and widespread support from both the local community and the general public.
Mr. Shearman described the horrific events of December 26, stating that he was able to smash his way out of the burning stone cottage but was bravely beaten back by the fierce flames as he desperately tried to re-enter through a bathroom window to rescue his children. He conveyed the deep anguish and trauma, emphasizing that his life and the lives of his loved ones were irrevocably altered, with "three of the greatest humans to ever grace our presence" tragically taken.
In the wake of this devastating loss, a GoFundMe page established to support Mr. Shearman has seen an overwhelming response, accumulating over £340,000 from more than 16,000 donors. He expressed immense humility and gratitude for this "unbelievable out-of-this-world generosity," noting that while nothing can undo the tragedy, the support has provided him with essentials like a roof, clothes, food, and most importantly, company and compassion.
Tom Shearman has also committed to ensuring the legacies of his family endure. He plans to honor his "unbelievably talented, empathetic, compassionate and beautiful wife," Nu, by preserving her passion for craft, design, and making. Nu Shearman operated a successful bespoke handbag manufacturing business, creating fashion accessories from leather and canvas, and had collaborated with knitting enthusiasts, even visiting America for her specialist bags and accessories. He also pledged to continue his "bright spark Eve's legacy of enjoyment from books and writing," and his "incredible son’s sheer compassion and desire to help people."
Friends and colleagues of the family have been left "shellshocked" by the tragedy. Carmen Schmidt, a close friend who owns an upmarket yarn wool shop, shared an emotional tribute, remembering Nu as "the brightest of lights" and urging everyone to cherish their loved ones.
Emergency services, who responded to the "well-established" fire around 3 am, were commended by Mr. Shearman for their valiant efforts to save his family. Investigations into the fire's origin are ongoing, with police believing it started on the ground floor; however, it is not being treated as suspicious. The blaze caused significant structural damage, destroying the roof, ceilings, and stairs of the property.
Mr. Shearman concluded his tribute with a poignant message: "Please all take every opportunity to hug your loved ones, tell them you love them. Because, as Paulo Coelho said, one day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you want. Do it now." He extended his heartfelt thanks to all involved emergency services, expressing hope that they too are being looked after. He urged, "Now go light up the darkest corners and the black sky. In memory of Nu. Eve. Ohner. Hutch."
