Heartbreak and Hunt: Tributes Flood for DJ Warras as Police Track Killer via CCTV

Johannesburg was plunged into mourning on Tuesday, December 16, following the tragic shooting of Warrick Stock, widely known as DJ Warras, a celebrated South African media personality. The 40-year-old entertainer, renowned for his charismatic presence across radio, television, and music, as well as his outspoken social and political commentary, was fatally shot in the Central Business District (CBD) while leaving Zambesi House.
Video footage crucial to the investigation shows a primary suspect, described as a short man with dreadlocks, approaching Warras before firing and attempting to flee on foot. Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana clarified that this was not a drive-by shooting, noting that the suspect had been seated near Warras’ vehicle prior to the attack. Another individual, allegedly wearing a security-style uniform, was reportedly present at the scene.
Police are actively tracing both suspects and the firearm used, confirming that spent cartridges were recovered. Investigators are focusing on Zambesi House and the nearby Carlton Centre, where unauthorised occupants present challenges to the ongoing probe. Authorities are also examining Warras’ alleged co-ownership of Zambesi House to determine whether building ownership or tenancy disputes played a role.
No definitive motive has yet been established. While speculation has linked the killing to hijacked buildings, police maintain that they are pursuing all possible leads. Major-General Kekana emphasized the priority of tracking the suspects’ movements after they walked a significant distance from the scene. Authorities have issued a public appeal for witnesses to come forward with information that could aid the investigation.
Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues, and fellow media personalities across South Africa, celebrating DJ Warras’ impactful career, infectious energy, and lasting legacy. His death has prompted national reflection on both the dangers of urban crime and the contributions of influential media figures in shaping South African culture.
