‘Hamnet’ Conquers Toronto: Film Festival's Coveted Audience Award Secured

Chloé Zhao's latest film, “Hamnet,” has achieved a significant milestone by securing the highly coveted Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) People’s Choice Award. This victory is not only a major boost for the film's potential Oscar aspirations but also marks a historic achievement for Zhao, who becomes the first director to win this prestigious award twice. Her previous win was in 2020 for “Nomadland,” a film that went on to claim the top prize at the Academy Awards.
The TIFF Audience Award has long been regarded as a reliable barometer for Oscar success, especially since the Academy expanded the Best Picture field in 2009. Past winners such as “Green Book” (2018) and Zhao’s own “Nomadland” (2020) have translated their TIFF acclaim into Best Picture Oscar wins. Other films like “The Fabelmans” (2022) also played a significant role during their respective awards seasons. Notably, only one winner, “Where Do We Go Now?” (2011), failed to secure a Best Picture nomination, with every other recipient claiming at least one Oscar. The 2023 winner, “The Life of Chuck,” whose release was delayed by Neon to 2025, faces challenges but might still contend in adapted screenplay.
The People’s Choice category, established in 1978, has seen seven recipients go on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, with five of these victories occurring in the last two decades, underscoring the award's increasing predictive power. This year, Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” was named the first runner-up for the Canadian prize, followed by Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” in third place, indicating strong audience reception for these films as well.
Beyond the main feature film category, TIFF also recognized excellence in other areas. The audience prize for best documentary was awarded to Barry Avrich’s “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue.” In the International People’s Choice category, Park Chan-wook’s South Korean film “No Other Choice” took the top honor, with Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” as the runner-up.
The 50th edition of the Toronto Film Festival distinguished itself as one of the most star-studded in recent memory. While it may not have generated the splashy sales figures that TIFF was historically known for, several films are still strong contenders for distribution deals. These include Steven Soderbergh’s “The Christophers,” Mona Fastvold’s “The Testament of Ann Lee,” and Daniel Roher’s “Tuner,” all of which garnered significant critical acclaim during the festival.
